Seat assignments thrown away when status changes with a schedule change

Here's an annoying little quirk I learnt this morning. I went to check in online for tonights flight and saw that I had been moved from my pre-assigned 3A to 21E. I called VA to ask why and they advised me there had been a 5 minute schedule change to my return flight only which meant Manila threw out my seating assignment and started again (I was not told of the schedule change). The resassigned everyone based on the status they currently had, not the status they had when they made the booking and/or made the seat assignment. I had dropped from WP to SG since making the booking and assignment so was provided with 21E instead of 3A as 'they needed to reseat all the WPs before they reseated you' (despite these WPs not having 3A before the schedule change).

The best part? We went through my other bookings and discovered that this had occurred with more than half of my bookings (schedule change, no notification, then given a random seat somwehere down the back).

If you status has changed since you did a seat assignment I would recommend checking your booking online - you may be in for a nasty shock (and you can't get your old seat back).

Well that is extremely annoying  - will be interesting to hear if it has only affected you or if it will be lots of unhappy VA WP and SG. I must say that 21E for a Gold seems a bit extreme to me, I would be suspecting that 2 flights have merged/morphed into 1 but even that situation could not explain that many Plats getting seating preferences ahead of you. Luckily I don't have any future VA flights with seating assigned yet.

Why did they change the assignment for an unaffected flight? I cant work it out.

Maybe just a fat fingered f#*k up? Or unintended consequence of someone in the IT Dept fiddling with seat selection/allocation stuff? Who knows?

I've noticed something with seat assignment with the schedule change for VA1 from October to the 1140 departure out of Sydney - we're flying in February, and as WP I'd been able to select Row 5 :). As usual on Virtually There with schedule changes, VA1 is displayed twice - the first flight (with our original seat requests) is shown as "Unconfirmed" and then the "Confirmed" VA1 flight just shows "Check-in required" against seat selection. I sent an email query off to VA (who, oddly, referred it on to Velocity?) and I received a reply from the Platinum desk that our seat requests were still in the system even though they're not showing on the itinerary - I'll still be WP at the time of the flight so am keeping fingers crossed! Not that there's really a bad seat in J on the 777, but as this is probably the one and only time I'll ever make Platinum, it would be hugely disappointing if we missed out on Row 5!

My airplane was changed today and seats changed but on check in I was told I had a seat blocked next to me. Shadow!

Just checked my booking for Oct LAX-MEL which I made months ago as Platinum (now SG). Happy to report that still seated in row 5, but will keep my eye on it.

Does anyone know what "Special Request. FQTR" means, listed under "Additional Info" on the booking?

My wifes 7:10am today SYD-OOL was canceled last night and she was allocated 26F. She is WP. When she questioned it they said 3B was available so she grabbed that. I think I would have stuck with 26F...
