Flying QF82 Sin to Syd 22/4 in J. Have had a seat selected for four weeks. Logged in tonight to checkin to find that not only has my seat selection gone, that there are no seats in J available!

Rang the call centre and my call was answered by the Fijian call centre. As expected they were completely unhelpful. Told me that she couldn’t help and that I had to go to the airport tonight to have this corrected. When I questioned this even she realised this suggestion was unrealistic. She then told me that I had to go to the airport early tomorrow to have this fixed.

This means that, to ensure I have a seat on the plane that I booked and paid for a month ago, I need to cancel an appointment and go to Changi early.

Sorry Qantas, this is unacceptable.

Are you on a classic reward?

Many moons ago, last century, I was downgraded from J to Y on a QF classic reward ADL to SIN. I didn't find out till check in (no OLCI back then). The worst thing was as I got nearer to the front of the check in queue I could hear two of the staff talking and saying to each other 'we still have to tell (my surname)' so I knew something was up. They tried to make it up to me by putting me at the front of Y with a shadow and a bottle of wine. Later QF tried to stiff me on the points refund by only giving me back a small proportion of the total points I paid for the return J ticket but I fought that and ended up getting more back. I was either PS or SG at that time. I was so furious and disappointed about the downgrade 😡😢 So I hope they're not doing it to you now.

I think you’ll be OK. They’re still selling one seat on your flight, and 1A is available.

Just hope it’s not your seat that they are selling!

Thanks Justinbrett.

No full priced ticket. Main reason for trip was to get the DSCs so definitely will not accept downgrading as this flight will make me platinum!

They better not…..although what can I do.

The reservation system is different to the check-in system. Try and do an online check-in.
This. Seat selection in MMB can be irrelevant once OLCI opens.

If you can OLCI then you'll generally find your seat as chosen.

I presume the issue is that QF has disabled OLCI because of document and vaccination requests.

The agent should have communicated that you were within T-24, thus the flight is under airport control. For the same reason at that time your seat selection preferences in MMB don't matter, it's what in your OLCI.

I suspect you'll find you do have the seat you originally chose.

Thanks for all your help. Have tried to call centres… Fiji was hopeless but the lady in Auckland tried really hard without success. Off to the airport early

You are going to be in Y
Highly doubtful.
Downgrades occur in order of fare class and status. Highly unlikely a full J pax would be downgraded. In fact, a J class NB pax would trump a U Class WP.

You can complete OLCI but it won't issue a boarding pass - did it on this exact flight number last weekend.
I think from Australian ports, but from LAX a few weeks ago OLCI wasn't an option, it simply said 'Check in at the Airport.'

Each Intl port may be different?

Dunno about the first point… QF is extremely status dependent… I would have thought a platinum on any ticket, including an award, would trump a bronze?

Same with my Qantas flight to LAX… OLCI was unavailable for me, referring me to the airport.

Sorry I will not do that. This flight is meant to get me to Platinum and I would not get that in Y.

If you are downgraded you can request ORC. But fingers crossed that's not the case.

By the way, if you want to get to the airport early to sort it out, the check-in area opens at 4:30pm. I suggest arriving before 4:15pm to get ahead in the queue waiting for it.

Interesting. By chance, you didn't originally select 7A did you?

Whether you agree or not, this is ops procedure.

If they do downgrade you, go with SQ, meaning change all your flying to SQi and VAd for dom travel in Aust.
Of course, do a moan on fecebook messaging to QFF first.
There is always the "for operational and safety reasons, we can amend your preferred seats" or words to that effect.
Guess OP would be ready to go to the airport by now, ... hopefully it all comes good tho.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As a P1 in J (revenue) travelling with a WP (U) and NB (U) we have been 'complementary' downgraded to Y in the past. This was for the domestic connection from delayed international US-AU flight.
