Re: The totally off-topic thread

Not a tight result, but close: 55% opposing, 45% supporting secession.

.

It was an absolute wipe-out! Only 4 councils out of 32 voted yes .... a thumping result in any language.

Scotland has voted to stay in the United Kingdom after voters decisively rejected independence.
With the results in from all 32 council areas, the "No" side won with 2,001,926 votes over 1,617,989 for "Yes".

Well I have stayed out of the debate so far. But as a Irish Republican, with a father who is Scottish you would think I would be all for a split. But I never believed it was the right thing for the future of Scotland.

It was pushed by all the wrong people for all the wrong reasons. It's time to let history stay in the past and for countries such as Scotland, Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland forge stronger mutually beneficial ties with each other to ensure the prosperity and stability in the future and to provide for a good standard of living for future generations.

Considering No was at 70% a couple of years ago, quite a shift in sentiment.

Re: The totally off-topic thread

I suppose the next major focus might now be the possible secession of Catalonia from Spain, or not. Nearer to home, noises have been made here about combining some of the Swiss cantons.

or maybe Perth from the rest of Oz:)

Re: The totally off-topic thread

Reality kicked in ;) Most of my Scottish colleagues seem to be happy with the result.

Sorry I had that around the wrong way. David Cameron let them have the referendum when the No vote was well ahead.

The reasons for voting were multi-factorial. I think in the wash we will find out that Yes Scotland managed to capture a big majority of the disaffected including the 16 and 17 year olds who are ineligible to vote in an election. It remains to be seen what if anything Independence would have offered them.
One of the platforms that Yes Scotland was running on was improving the life expectancy in the West of Scotland. Currently 1 in 4 baby boys born in Glasgow will die before the age of 65.
Quite how this would be achieved without banning booze, fa_s and chip shops I don't quite know.

The writing was on the wall when the returning officer for the Western Isles announced the count in Gaelic (the first language for the majority of their population) and the No's had won
You couldn't make that stuff up!

Re: The totally off-topic thread

bugger, that means the pound will probably start to rise against the $. :(

Only joking, before someone decides to give me a Glasgow kiss...........

So is this evidence of cheating in the vote?

Nice little graph showing disposable income and how people voted.

It looks like a polling official putting ballot papers into their correct piles to me (given it was in plain view!).

The commentary says it all, really.

Not entirely unexpected. There is however at least one glaring mistake on that graph.
Dunbartonshire is not a voting area. It is split into two : East Dunbartonshire with a high income and voted No and West Dunbartonshire with a much lower income which voted Yes.

OK, Get the agreement of all the various indigenous peoples for the particular symbol to be incorporated, and then lets talk. I'm prepared to be VERY patient :)

Its a common mistake of certain groups to fight for symbols, rather than substance like quality of life, education, health etc.

Meanwhile, back on topic, this is good riddance: BBC News - Scottish referendum: Salmond quits after Scots vote No

So essentially - in stereotypical, broad-sweeping terms - the working class wanted to secede from the union whilst the upper classes wanted to remain in the union.

I'd give a multi like for your symbol quote .... Absolutely spot on!

LOL the NO vote lost because there were not enough poor people. Not the best recipe for success.

IMHO they lost because not enough people wanted change.

4/32 councils is the only statistic worth looking at.
