Hi,

As the title suggests, i am looking to use QFF points during school holidays as my wife is a school teacher. There is not really a chance of me getting status, we only fly a few times a year. I have about 80,000 QFF points at the moment, so its more a question of should i be striving to earn more for a RTW or specific redemption, or should i just use them them how i have planned.

Currently my best idea for use of QFF points is classic award between MKY and CNS for 8000 and $50 taxes, which we would use a few times a year (works out at around 3.11 cents per point) or using the points for internal US flights when we go for holidays. Are there any other options available for someone in my position? I should probably also point out that my wife is only interested in going to canada or europe.

My last question is RTW business awards, for someone in my position is this worth saving for, or will seat availability be scarce or non existent?

Cheers,

Do you need a new toaster? Someone had to ask.:)

I'd suggest if travelling o/s a points upgrade would yield the best value but without status I suspect the chances are low.

MKY-CNS for 8000+$50 is not too bad. Those milk run flights over two sectors can be several hundred dollars. And you'd get SC. If you don't fancy the upgrade lottery, that might be your best option.

RTW Business is available but a long way off at over 500k pionts.

Classic awards don't give SCs, nor would it matter as the OP doesn't fly enough to earn status.

I was pretty sure i had very limited options, it was more hoping I'd missed something. I have got 80000 in 5 months so I'm not too worried about Saving for rtw. Will my ability to redeem be similar to the current availability or does a rtw ticket give more options? If it is similar availability I might just stick to my current plan.

thanks for the responses.

Personally, I'd stick to your current plan.

I normally use my points when I get about 200K worth.

When the time comes for the rest of the world come back here and we'll give you a hand.

I was thinking points plus pay. But re-reading the OP it clearly says classic award. I stand corrected. Good pick up CaviAck, thanks.

Chasing status credits is like a hamster running in a hamster wheel. Some people chase gold or platinum by flying status runs or paying expensive tickets to get status but it takes them a whole year to do so and next year do the same again.

Status is really only worth it if you fly a lot for work, or if your lifestyle results in points accumulation of at least 200-400kpoints per year because the award seats that are really worth chasing are seats like business class long haul. 2 return tickets SYD-LAX is nearly 400k in points.

Status is good if after achieving a particular level your SUBSEQUENT flight experience for the rest of your year is better because you now get lounge access, better upgrade potential and better award redemption potential. You then have to maintain status by making sure you fly enough next year.

The best thing to do in my opinion is not to change your lifestyle, get BFOD, and in the meantime if your points allow redeem for some business class flights either domestic or international. Sure readjust how you accumulate your points -CC or woollies EDR card etc etc but dontchange how much you spend.

I never redeem for economy or buy toasters from the Airline store.

I suggest saving up points for at least a domestic business class.

international business awards without require a lot of work and flexibility in dates and forward planning - 353 days ahead especially for school holidays

I only do international upgrades from prem Y bought tickets. Best value IMHO.

I like to keep between 800k-1m in stock for any flights of fancy. But we are all different
