Scams like these

Take care with this one. Looks very genuine and no spelling errors etc but absolutely a scam email.

Is this really a scam? I don't know the sender's address but, if a scam, it was good of them to direct you to your Profile Settings on the App rather than going via the Review button. That's where I would go

Wise offers a security feature where you register a password/phrase communication code that only you know and if it does not appear on any message that is received from them, it is not a genuine Wise communication. I have not received any scam messages purporting to be from Wise to date so I cannot say whether the feature has been compromised but they would have to intercept a genuine communication to copy it. It sounds like too much trouble for scammers to bother with when they prefer the 'scatter gun' approach.

I agree. Always look for my unique pass phrase on any email message. Also get email for any withdrawal (over a certain amount, if you request this.)

Just received another scam attempt related to the QFF hack on my old email I used for my FF account contact .This one is from so it says, Qantas Money , wanting my membership details as my account is overdue and I will be locked out.
Of course I don't have a Qantas Money account and even if I did they would not be asking for my details.

Yeap, that was mine, (past thread up above), was on Smartphone, was in Melbourne I think, so could hover over sender.
Thought it looked a tad odd after, but lucky I didnt interact.
All the logos of businesses we deal with, its just too easy for the scammers to cut and paste logos.
Will be scary if and when they do catch upto to what we would do, here, in Aus.

Got a Whatsapp message from our hotel in Lisbon booked for next month. They wanted me to click a link to "reconfirm my reservation details". Scammer was a bit lax though, left their Indonesia based phone number on the message.

Was that a hacked Booking.com reservation?

I had two similar WA messages for a stay next month. Block early, block often!

Who did you make the booking through?
Bookingdotcom. Had this with another booking at a Bangkok hotel.
Not sure how they are accessing the contact details but I assume it comes from the hack of a couple of years ago. The dodgy messages only come via Whatsapp but they do have the name of the hotel in them. So I don't know how this is happening. I've told the hotels on both occasions.

It must be that the scammers have gotten indepth into Booking.com, booking.yeah, as they know you have an upcoming booking.

Had another one of those/that Mandarin speaking girl, press #1 for English, and then the spiel goes on in Mandarin, with "tung shi", meaning something like a thing or package.
Verified business name rego is one thing, but these scammers can still use 04 phone numbers to scam/spam.

The 04 numbers don't show up as Unverified?
Not that any legit company would contact you with any sort of automated system on an 04 number ...

I've had two emails in Thai which purport to be from the Westin hotel chain, and I think they're asking for a review.
They may be legit though, I did make a last-minute booking with the Westin in London, Saturday-before-last, when the AirBnB style Agoda booking I'd made fell through (property owner seems to have stopped renting it out - if they told Agoda then Agoda never told me - 100% ghosted). It was a very hurried booking, I was watching availability of rooms in hotels disappear as I was trying to book them, and I guess I could have selected something which made the Westin's system think I spoke Thai.
Or it could just be a scam of some description ...

The Booking hack was more recent (April). If one or more of your reservations was in the data breach, they should have advised you and issued a new Pin for that booking along with this warning/reminder that:

  • They’ll never ask to share CC details by email, over the phone, text or Whatsapp
  • Never ask for bank transfer
  • And to be vigilant if you receive an email claiming to be from the hotel
I have an upcoming stay that was booked about a week before the hack. They have everything. Booking ref, hotel name, address, checkin/out dates, my name, phone number and email. Arguably worse than the QF Data breach but your hardly hear anything.

A couple of weeks ago I received two WhatsApp messages - which I reported. It was pretty obvious and dumb as they purported to be from Expedia… But o/n I received a very convincing looking email claiming to be from the hotel but with a non-descript email address.

I’m tempted to cancel and rebook but will message the hotel first via the Booking platform.

@CMA222 Where on Wise do you set this up? I took a quick look on the app and I couldn't see anywhere obvious to activate this feature. Thanks.

Its just the recorded voice, comingad from a 04.
Not an SMS.
No, the caller's id didn't come up as unverified, it was a (missed call), my phone had blocked the call, so it didn't sound, and it showed up in (blocked) on the Huawei phone key keypad.

Not sure why someone in Brazil wants to lend me money? Especially when the email comes from someone different to the signee
