I don't know if anyone else have experienced this. I have a Samsung Mobile which uses Smart Call which is used to identify spam callers. It usually works well but I have noticed lately the following calls from a site which scams Amazon saying we have debited $90 from your account.
The number has the same first six digits of my mobile number.
The number shows a Smart Call ID tag with a false Tag such as Freds Pie shop or some other tag to appear as genuine. It is the six digit prefix that gives it away.

Yes, very slick but lacked the personal "Hi Oatek" that I get with genuine PayPal emails.

Something is not quite right. I suspect they're all passing information around.
I was in Sydney last week. I was using my brothers internet to connect my laptop, phone and tablet.
I searched for rangehoods on my phone and laptop and bought one form Good Guys.
My brother was getting ads on his laptop for rangehoods. We have no shared apps.
Is this Optus spying on website usage and then spamming all devices using that route? It's a disgusting practice that needs to stop. We should be entitled to some privacy. This society is really in a race to the bottom.

If you searched through Google, then they will be the source of all those adverts, not Optus.

We have been getting lots of emails this last month to say our siteground domain is due and will be cut off today. All from dodgy addresses.
We do use siteground but not for the domian and not that email and it is a long way from needing to be renewed.

How? There is nothing in common between my brothers laptop and my laptop/phone/tablet other than using his router.
How would Google make the link? Listening to our conversations?
Plus I don't think he uses Google. He's into some fandangly browser.

Possibly Google harvested all of the device ID's and IP addresses for all devices on your brothers network - including the device ID and IP address of your laptop connected to his network - fed it back into their system, created a profile/association between them all, and then fed it back out to other devices connected to that network and associated with those IP addresses.
The commonality of your laptop and his network is what linked it all up, I suspect.
Think of it another way - Google had no idea that you were a visitor/stranger to your brothers network. Google just thought/assumed that your laptop was a new device owned by your brother, and linked it up to the profile/association that they have on your brother, and then started serving ads back out to the other known devices associated with your brothers profile.
You don't need to use Google as a search browser to be served ads generated by Googles Ad service. They collect information all over the place and serve it back to you.
I agree that its a disgusting practice that needs to stop. The EU have tighter laws on this sort of privacy theft as compared to Australia.

Just goes to show what can happen without strict regulations in place.
Had an interesting chat with someone at work today.
They wanted to confirm that a person received their renewal offer. He said to me they did and they opened that email 113 times! What?
How is that possible? Let's say that was me. I have read receipt turned off. Apparently that means nothing as companies can pay money to email providers for statistics. Seriously?
See if you can follow me. I'm a small company that has come across thousands of email addresses. I send emails to all of them then pay email providers money to tell me who has opened their email. I then sell those email to scammers and anyone else interested.
My privacy has been violated. It is a disgusting practice. It's actually quite sad that people are making money off this practice.
