Hi all,

Apologies if this question has been answered but hard to find the answer through search. If you are presently Gold and you have say 990 SC accumulated and the very next flight you earn 50 SC, that brings you to 1040 SC. With that gives you an upgraded membership from Gold to Platinum and a new review date.

My question is (and I should know from when I went from Silver to Gold, but that was a number of years ago) how are the additional 40 SC's above 1000 treated. i.e Are they a kick start in the quest to earn the 800 required to maintain platinum (i.e only 760 then required in the coming year) or do the 40 somehow get lost in the previous year and another 800 need to be earned.

TIA

Yep, they're lost for requalification, but still count for moving up a level, so when you moved from Silver to Gold they would have been useful if you were looking to get Platinum, but not for requalifying for Gold.

Sadly there's nowhere to use them once you hit Platinum - just be thankful it was a small amount relatively speaking, I lost out on about 100 SC when I hit Platinum :(

Thanks Lenny. In my case, my exact number is 26, so not as bad as yours. I do recall my Silver to Gold experience - I hit the 500 dead eye dick, so didn't lose anything nor think there may have been any issues.

Boom!! Good planning there :), it was only really annoying in my case because I'd mapped everything out and taken a status run to make sure my pre-planned winter trip to Melbourne with Lady Lenny got me over with only a few SC to spare...then work dropped a Malaysia trip on me so it blew everything right out of whack. First world problem though I know - can you really mourn wasted status credits that you didn't pay for??

Of course technically speaking they still contribute to you being able to gift Companion Gold though right? I've managed to do that twice and one of the giftees reported she had a soft landing back to PS. Companion Silver?

One year my husband earned 1200SC in his year - was able to gift gold companion. Last year he earned 1860SCs (gotta love lots of US flights at cheap F rates) so was able to gift Platinum.

Next month he drops to gold. The bonus points are nice but not worth keep chasing when there are other options for us (self funded/holiday travellers).

True, but I never even earned enough whilst Platinum to approach that possibility!! :)

I think my VA year will finish in a couple of days, at about 1440, companion gold was given away on this site. I could have got to companion WP however I became selfish (if you can call in that) and wanted to see if I could retain QF P1, VA WP and also hit *G with SQ in a 12 month period. Sadly for myself I was able to in 11 months. Way to much fling in 1 year.

So this companion Gold lurk then. I just looked it up on the Virgin Website. I read that it says you need 500 additional Status Credits over and above what is required to maintain Platinum.

So how does this work?
  1. I'm assuming, that on your anniversary and the clock starts, you need 800 to maintain so if you hit 1300 within that anniversary year, you get the Companion Gold.
  2. OR, if your Status Credit Balance hit's 1300 (i.e 300 more - or in my case will be 274 more (300-26)) that could give me a companion gold as it would be 1300 in the rolling year to that point in time.

It's supposed to be 1. When you get to 1,300 in your membership year.

Its the SC earn in the 12mth period of renewal.

So your qual period starts May 1st 2018, if you earn 1300SCs by May 1st 2019, you can gift Gold. BUT, if you plan on earning 1800SCs by May 1st 2019, you can gift WP but you cant gift both.

BUT, again. The "gift" period starts when you hit those triggers and not your renewal date.

My husband earned 1300scs approx Jan 2017 and got a letter in the mail, advising he can gift Gold no later than Jan 2018. Knowing what our travel plans were, we waited and in March 2017, he had 1800+SC and got a letter in the mail that he was now allowed to gift Platinum and had until March 2018 to do it. He didnt get a reminder about the gift cut off date so mark it down in your calendar.

Yes as Denali mentions the timing of the gifting is crucial, particularly as recipients are likely infrequent flyers. If you have relatives who you know won't be flying much immediately but have later plans, time it accordingly. My parents drove me a bit mad. They had paid J on SG and with family pooling easily accrued enough VA SCs for Platinum. Problem was of course, they failed to fly the VA sectors in order to activate it. They even managed to screw up by booking a couple of Tiger flights along the way .

Anyway, I ended up gifting them Companion SG so ultimately they got there.
