SC earn - AS codeshare on AA

Hi all,

I have a question requiring a little interpretation. The question of SC earn on AA flight numbers but AS metal has often arisen, but rarely the question of an AS flight number but AA metal. It appears, however, that doing exactly that is a great value way to get on the AA AFS transcons in First Class.

So the question is twofold:

1) If the AS website presents the following as a flight option:

<AA Logo> American 3 (Alaska Airlines 1747)
Operated by American Airlines

does it appear I'm booking AA3 or AS1747?

2) If it's AA3, the second question is moot. If not, and travel is indeed on AS1747 but on AA metal, is this eligible for SC earn?

Referencing QF's site - 'You can earn Status credits when flying on eligible Qantas, oneworld Alliance airlines'. I would have thought even if I'm travelling on AS, I am nonetheless flying on AA given it's their metal.

Anyway folks, interesting question - would be keen to hear your thoughts.

Cheers.

Sorry it wont earn anything if the AS codeshare on AA.From the T&Cs-
Alaska Airlines (AS)BGHKLMQSTUVYEconomy1 -
FFirst150%
Excluded: Points are not earned on Codeshare Flights operated by an airline other than Qantas.

While I would not doubt the superior knowledge of drron, I have no hesitation in (frequently) questioning the validity of information noted on the QF website.

I may well be incorrect but I think some AFF members have posted success in earning SCs on AA codeshares operated by AS. I'm thinking specifically of the YUPP/KUPP fares from LAX to SEA that, again I think, earn SCs.

drron, I noticed that, although I'm not sure your quote and mine are necessarily incongruous - one relates to points, one relates to status credits. The question also remains that AS's site is presenting AA3 as the primary flight, and includes an AA icon (it brackets the AS codeshare next to it).

Danger, you're correct - there's been success traveling on AS metal under an AA flight number. This question applies in reverse, however. In this case, it's a flight (AA3) that would normally accrue points and status credits, but where it's ticketed as a non-OW airline with whom QFF have a different set of applicable earn rules.

The other interesting point of note is that AS's site gives a Business seat map despite very clearly stating travel is on First Class for AA3/AS1747. Some of the consolidators show an F map for this codeshare, some J. Would be an intriguing claim, given AS is trying to construe Business on a codeshare as being 'their' First Class offering on that flight (would be almost like QF Business codeshares on AA domestic, but in reverse!).

Certainly there are often incorrect postings but the T&Cs specifically say no points awarded on AS codeshares on other airlines. If you cant earn points you wont earn SCs.
AA3 is a 3 class service.AS dont have a J class so I am guessing they call it F but actually it is the J cabin. If you are in the F cabin it is row 2 or 3 only.J is rows 7-11.

I learnt about the T&C relating to AS codeshare flights after my flights last year unfortunately. I missed out on 30 sc by booking through AS and not AA as the AS flights were on AA metal. I can't remember how much the fare difference was though.

I guess it depends on how much you want to pay for your SC & points in this particular situation.

I checked a First class LAX-SEA fare and they are basically the same between AA and AS at USD401.

On AS and AA, with +++'s it comes to $411.80.

The same seat, same flight, on AA it will earn from 90 SC's and from 2560 QFF points, on AS flight number it will earn no SC's and 1700 QFF points.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

As it doesn't really seem to be a value run given the general consensus that it's zero SC earn, the fare is JFK-LAX-SJC, which prices out substantially cheaper on AS than just AA3 JFK-LAX on either AS or AA number. I'm SFO-based, but SJC is only about 20 minutes further down the road and is often a far cheaper alternative... had this been an SC-earning option that got one up-front on a 3-class AFS for $600 cheaper than Business, it would have been a great play. I'm between SFO and NYC every third week - so I would have loved it, but question asked, question answered!

Thanks all.
