Santiago (SCL) Stopover Tips

Bitten,
This is going to be hard!!
I fully understand that a “3hr connection” was tempting at the time of booking, but there are a couple of difficulties that you are going to struggle to overcome. Overall I rate your chance of making the Sky flight VERY slim. Sorry L But at the same time, if everything goes really well, it just may work out. If you cannot change things now, then at least make sure you go into this knowing you are probably going to fail, so not only have a Plan B, but actually believe that you will probably be using it.
The main problems you face are the following:
(1) QF27 may be scheduled to arrive at 11:05 hrs, but I think it averages about 40 minutes late.
(2) You have to pay the reciprocity fee which takes extra time, then go through immigration after wating for bag, so at least 30 mins from aircraft door to getting through, and that with incredible luck.
(3) You need to checkin with Sky, a Low Cost Carrier – and technically I think they require you to present 3hrs prior for an international flight.
If you are going to attempt this, the best tricks and advice I can give are the following:
(1) QF27 parks at a new gate a long way from the recip fee/immigration area – use this to RACE to get to the ricprocity counters before too many others catch up and pass you.
(2) After paying the reciprocity fee, as you approach the immigration queues, the left hand side is for Chileans, the right is for all foreigners. If there is a large amount in the, just line up in the Chilean queue – they will process you no worries – the Chilean queue normally moves much faster and they often divert foreigners to it when waiting times are high.
(3) As soon as you get down to the baggage collection area, ascertain which belt it is, and if they haven’t started coming out yet, have a look to make sure you know where you have to go through customs – it is usually a little way past where the carousel is. Use a luggage trolley – they are free.
(4) When you get through Customs, race out barging through all the taxi people and crowds. Keep going straight ahead until you find the first lift you can, and head up to level 3 Departures.
(5) I have not used Sky, but they could be like Latam in that their checkin is divided into domestic and international, even though they appear to all be lumped together.
(6) Don’t be shy to push to the front if there is a long queue – if you tread on others and manage to get through to the staff that you are fearful of missing the cutoff, this may save you. But probably not J
Your whole battle is to turn up for checkin before they close the flight. You cannot speed up the baggage collection – just make sure that you use the tips above to make sure you get to the carousel before the bags arrive.
Then race for the checkin!!!!!!!!!

In SCL Latam lounge now...got the Business upgrade. QF27 left late but was actually early due to tailwinds.
We arrived in the new section of terminal and walked for a while all on one level until it joined the old section. You come around a corner and there is the recipriocity booth...I am transiting so didnt use it. A bit further on transit goes left and baggage collection goes right. There are a few airline desks here and then security again. Go up the escalator or the big lift and you are in the terminal.
As Juddles says L for DOM and R for INT.
Also as he says the Lounges are well hidden. The Latam one is up some coughpy looking stairs or the lift near Victoria Secret as he says. This is in a smaller avenue not the main walk thru one but all the shops are in the same area.
There is lots of construction around the airport so this may change.

Due to heavy snow blocking the Andes I had another unexpected trip through SCL a few days ago. This flight was arriving from LaPaz so not a lot of signs up for the reciprocity booth unlike when QF arrives, several of our group got turned back at passport control. I used my British passport with no problems.
Flying out the next day to Buenos Aeries on a Air Canada ticket purchased the night before I was refused a ticket at check in because I had no proof of flight out of Argentina. I was rejoining the tour in BA but due to numbers and flights etc had agreed to travel separately by myself rather than with the group.
The tour is bussing out of Argentina via Iguassu Falls and Brazil...after about 35 minutes of slow arguing in Spanglish they finally decided to allow me a ticket.
Once airside I met the tour guide again who said he had not had this problem before.
I had a flight from SCL back to SYD but other internal flights were all on the tour companies choices.
Why does Air Canada or Chile care if I decide to live in Argentina?
Argentina immigration didn’t ask anything about my plans?
Just a warning for others.
Once airside the new C gates were in use with a few shops and a McDonalds down that end now.

Can anyone help with a luggage query on LATAM - tried searching but can't find answer elsewhere.

I have a return booking on LATAM from Santiago to Buenos Aires at the end of June. Booking does not include luggage. LATAM website says;

'Your fare includes a carry-on baggage of up to 8 kilos and one personal item at no extra cost for each passenger. If your carry-on baggage exceeds the maximum size and weight allowed, you will have the option to check it, for an extra fee.' The bolding is Latam's!

I will be travelling with a small rucksack that will fit under seat in front and meets LATAM conditions for a personal item -
  • You can carry-on one personal item. Allowed dimensions are up to 45 x 35 x 20 cm. (Length, height, width).
I will also have a small case which can meet the 8kgs limit but at 56 * 35 * 24 cms marginally exceeds their guidance for hand luggage (not the personal item) of 53 * 33 * 23 cms. Actually their guidance is in inches (21 * 13 * 9) and I have done the calculations.

I have never flown on LATAM before so can anyone with experience enlighten me as to how draconian these rules are policed? Or should I bite the bullet and buy luggage in advance as I am sure it will be somewhat punitive at the airport?

I took a Xiamen Airlines flight a few weeks ago from Xiamen and check-in staff were being ruthless with bags over 20Kgs - 20.9 was just OK but 21+ meant you had to remove something (I only had hand luggage).

My experience in the last few weeks is everything but chickens gets taken on board.
If the flight is full they will put a yellow ticket cabin approved or something on your bag...you may need to check the other one but pretty unlikely.
Excess fees are not that high anyway...15US for another 15kg one of the shoppers in our group said.

Another thing I noticed is they instantly recline at take off, no matter how long or short the flight.

Thanks jastel. I will leave my 5 chickens in Sydney then.

A colleague suggested to me that the 15USD to check in a 15 Kg bag was for domestic flights. My flight is to BA so he thinks the international charge may be higher. I will search the Latam website to see if they have luggage prices listed. If I attempt to add luggage to my booking one bag is offered at 29 AUD with the ominous threat that it increases to an unspecified amount at 6 hours prior to departure.

I have done both in the last few weeks.
An INT flight may only be 1 hour while a DOM could be 4 hours.
Maybe I should have said any flight landing somewhere in South America rather than intercontinental seems to have no luggage rules.
Judging by what they are carrying on board they can’t be charging much.
One of our flights had a big 15kg weight limit on it...several members got on with 23kg, and 2 cabin bags...no charges.

A point is they do enforce priority boarding but today’s was different...windows first, then middles and aisles last...after prioritys of course.
Usually it goes 15-30, the back of the plane, then 1-15 after.
This means anyone in the last few rows down the back where it seems LATAM sticks me lately rushes to get bin space. The last 3 rows of lockers are full of staffs luggage and airplane safety gear...so row 30 which usually have the babies starts stashing their stuff about row 26. Lucky I travel light and put my bag at my feet but have not used a bin since I have been here.

Four flights over the Andes in the last month and not had a window...

A tip to find the Recipriocity Booth is to start heading to the right of the corridor when you see a raised travelator about a foot higher than the floor on the RHS of the hallway.
Thee will be a few Aussie flags and messages on the poles and then you will see the booths and zig zag ropes.

Fortunately I also have a UK passport so I think I am exempt from the reciprocity fee in Chile and any visa requirements for Chile, Argentina and Uruguay (my destinations on this trip).

I think it's now only Australians left with the RF. It has been scratched for US citizens.

Australians don't require a visa for Chile, Uruguay and Argentina and there are no fees for the two latter.

Use your UK passport in Chile, Uraguay and Argentina no problems...no fees...I just did that myself.

Brazil charges Aussies a visa fee but it stops in about 5 days time so I used UK there as well last week.

In SCL again waiting for QF28 home...used the premium check in per juddles advice...no Business upgrade yet but paid for PE anyway.
Stayed at Holiday Inn across the road last night...best location, good food, quiet and no problems.

Enjoy your trip.

Update...got upgraded at the gate, Business was only half full so not sure why wasn't done earlier.
I suspect the Latam girl in GIG checked me right through from Rio to SYD as I had to get my bag in SCL but it never appeared and was taken off the plane with a SYD tag on it and held until next days QF28...which I was on anyway. Seems like a language problem.

Greetings all - I have a connection on LATAM La Paz to Santiago then QF Santiago to Sydney. Our connection time in Santiago is only 1 hour before we fly back on QF? it seems way too tight - should I try and get an earlier flight into Santiago?
Many thanks

I'm at SCL now. Sadly QF28 is delayed by several hours today, we pushed back but returned to the gate and we've all been given vouchers. If there's one thing that I don't think has been covered it's where the LATAM lounge is. If connecting you have to go back through duty free nearly towards the priority security screening lane from the LATAM check in and there's a lift one level up to it. If you're starting in SCL, it is immediately to the right after security but I was jet-lagged enough to miss it at first glance.

Agree - it is difficult to find. From one concourse I was directed through a door to get to the elevator area - completely un-marked.

Hi, thanks for all the amazing information. I am flying into Santiago on QF27 on 3rd April arrival 11.05am. I was thinking about booking a Jetsmart domestic flight to Puerto Natales at 12.20PM the same day. I am flying business so will be one of the first out of the plane and my baggage will have priority. Is this doable? I am tempted to take the risk and blow the airfare if need be. Am I crazy or is this within the realms of possibility ? Lesley

I was in J about 4 weeks ago and all luggage took nearly 45 minutes before it came out. There was some guy just sitting on the carousel shunting stuff through. Personally I wouldn't even think about it but YMMV
