I purchased a samsonite case in New York, loaded it with 22.5kg for flights back to Oz. The combonation lock was broken (closed) on return to Oz. I had not kept the reciepts and thought I would have a hard time claiming on the lifetime warranty. Called the Australian number and had a new lock sent out within 2 days, no cost. Also had the option of sending it to them and they would put the new lock in again, no cost.

The link you provided takes me to another story - but IIRC the samsonite clip said something along the lines that the warrant didn't cover flying or something?

I tend to ignore any terms and conditions like that and simply assume the goods must be fit for purpose, as required under Australian consumer law. To me, that includes travel by air :)

Having said that, I stick to two-wheeled samsonite soft-sided luggage. I have been more than satisfied with my purchases and only replace the bags when the exterior gets a bit too scruffy (and that's after many many years).

I had a broken lock on a Samsonite Oyster case about 4-5 years ago and had no trouble getting it fixed under warranty. It wasn't a new case either. Can't remember how old it was.
