Recently I flown from MEL-SYD in Y and SYD-MEL in J with all flights on the same day. Can I use the J lounge in SYD domestic on arrival and then again when I depart later that day? Was thinking about using it as an arrival lounge but not sure whether I would be permitted entry so I didn't try.

Yes, you would have got in. The website states that the access criteria for people flying in Business are "Next onward flight that day must be on a Qantas or Emirates flight. One guest allowed and does not need to be travelling."

PS: as a general rule, if you want lounge access and you're not sure if you qualify or not, you should just give it a try. Worst case scenario is they say no.
