interesting that none of the above posts have mentioned the making a mental note of the number of rows between you and your 2 exist choices. I hope it's something you really do everytime because it's too late when the cabin has smoke in it.

Actually, they recommendation on the QF video doesn't suggest checking the number of rows between you and the exits, they recommend noting the number of seats between you and the exit. I assume that this is to try and improve the mental arithmetical skills of passengers as they divide the number of seats by the number of seats across in order to determine the number of rows

Growing up with a father who was a pilot in the industry,we used to get many (sometimes too many) briefings on what to do, especially the seat count to the nearest exit.

Another one that he always said but I have never heard anyone mention publicly is to keep your shoes on 30 minutes from pushback. Reason being that this is the critical time and percentage wise when most accidents occur as the plane is under the most stress and bare feet may hinder your egress due to fire or debris.

Never had to use either thank god

LOL!!

On the video I think they just highlight the tip of the aisle seats on one side only, towards the exit (I'll check it tomorrow though). They are more likely trying to dumb it down in case people didn't understand what a "row" is :D:D:D

hahah. The exact same thought about not understanding what a row was passed through my mind as well. And I am also pretty sure they just hightlight the tips of the seats as they tell you to count them!

I actually keep my shoes on for that reason, however not for 30 min. When I think we are high enough (so that I can put them back on) I remove them. If we "land" before I can get them back on, I'm thinking the shoes wouldn't have made a differnece.

I do generally listen to the briefing, however much less so when it is a multi-sector flight and I haven't even got out of my seat.

Dave, Dave, I didn't think for a moment that you didn't know what a 'row' was, of course!! I am talking about QF dumbing down for their 'not-the-brightest-stock-in-Australia' pax :D:mrgreen:

I just hope that there are no recliners vs anti-recliners between myself and the exit. I'll be counting the arguements long after I've caught on fire.

Actually Singapore Airlines recommends keeping shoes on throughout the flight. This suggestion resulted from the SIA crash SQ6 in Taipai.

Other findings also included changes to the footware worn by SQ female FA's as many lost their sandles during the takeoff crash.

Well that accident happended before the aircraft left the tarmac. I keep my shoes on until the seatbelt sign has been turned off, and make sure they are back on before the seatbelt sign is turned on for landing.

On the flip side, some people keeping their high heels on have caused problems during evacuations.

Embarrassing moment this evening...

Sitting aboard DJ564 in BNE (service to CBR), I strike up conversation with the lady sitting next to me. Next thing I know the FA interrupts us and asks if we would pay attention to the safety briefing. We were so engaged in our discussion that we had not noticed it had started!

Oops...

I took my shoes off once for the whole flight, and managed to clear the whole cabin, and could not get them back on before we were due to land. My feet swell so badly, so these days I just let them swell in my shoes.

JohnK, have you tried the calf exercise (the sort that's in the in flight mag)? It does help some people.

I don't have a problem with swelly or smelly feet. For me its a case of my feet run and my nose smells rather than vice versa. But it is true that noses run in my family.

Try buying a pair of flight socks (compression stockings essentially) I use them aswell as Skins. A whole range a benefits, no swelling, reduced dehydration, reduced jet-lag and keeps me a bit warmer for when I point all the air vents towards myself. :p
