Curious as to if this has happened to anyone else.

We stayed at Ridges Sydney Airport last Friday, checked in using the automated machine, I’m sure I pressed ‘no’ for the breakfast option, but on checkout there was a charge for breakfast, which neither of us had as we intended to have something in a lounge.
When questioned the charge was deducted.
I wonder what the name/room validation is. Ask for room number, then name? Or perhaps ask for room number, staff checks and replies with your name? Easy to say ‘yes’, and voila, a free breakfast on someones else account.
As usual, I’m very much over thinking things….. :)

Some places, I've just been asked my room number only. And I (over?) thought it was a bit slack.

Not at the Rydges airport, but have had hotels try to add a movie or two. Removed straight away when questioned.
I didn't even realise hotels still had movies!

They used to check names, but somewhere along the way someone took a photo of the sheet of room numbers and names, and posted it online. Caused a bit of a privacy dispute

That check in machine is terrible - last month I used it because the human staff were busy and it put us on level 3 when I had booked a runway view room. I waited for a human and she straight up said the machine is cough and does weird stuff. No brekky charge though so probably not machine related, I am guessing human error like you suggest with an incorrect room number.

In Feb I was encouraged to use the check in machine at Rydges SYD.
Part way through I asked the attendant at what stage would I see an upgrade (I'm PGR Black) and he immediately said to join the queue to check in at the desk as the machines do not recognise status.

Agree that the checkin kiosk is currently 'non-functional'. I attempted to check in with it as the queue for the human checkin was long. Got to the final step of check in and the machine froze... so I had to join the queue for the human. Ever the optimist, I tried it again on check out and had the same problem and had to join the queue for the human. Just give it a miss and join the queue.

We tend to stay there when flying international the next day but last time it seemed that the air con filters hadn't been cleaned for quite some time. MrLtL who is susceptible to dust and other allergens had a terrible night. It was only the next morning we realised it would have been better to have turned the air con off altogether. Mentioned to desk and left note in room but sure it will have gone nowhere.

At the outset I don't like the Rydges web site. I find it clunky. That said, this may be a stupid question but as a member, what is actually meant by "10 percent off the flexible rate" ...where the flexible rate is also shown. When trying to delve into the detail, it does not clearly state that the 10 percent of the best flexible rate is actually a flexible rate! Is it?

IME, if it doesn't state that the rate is non-refundable, then it is flexible. I agree, it is a little confusing at times.

Hey
I have a night at SYD pre SQ212 dep on Mar 14 - how decent is in-house restaurant please? If just so so and I suspect it is suggestions for alternative in reasonable proximity? I am kinda thinking Italian - this popped up in a simple search Capanno Trattoria Bar and Grill | Sydney NSW as did this Argentinian restaurant Home - La Boca Bar & Grill.

Would love thoughts of fellow AFFers 👍
I didn’t try the in-house restaurant as the “set” menu was pricey and no “PGR member” discounts.

La Boca is the Stamford airport venue and would likely be decent enough (but right round the other side and if roadworks are on hard to get to)

The Grounds of Alexandria is probably as close

Within walking distance is Rowers Club (over the airport walkway and across the bridge) around 1.1km (ignore the maps advice there’s the overhead footbridge from the carpark that they don’t have on them)
Good view across the Cooks river to the international airport

Couldn’t believe the $15 lunch specials !

while further on a stack of restaurants in the vicinity of Wolli Creek station
