I have just returned from Africa with several flights in eastern and South Africa, all in Y.
The best flights in terms of in flight service were two flights JNB-KGL (Kigali, Rwanda) and return with Rwanda Air. Rwanda Air have several 737-700NG aircraft and the food and drinks service was very good in comparison to the typical Y fare. On neither flight was the plane anywhere near full. While this allowed for plenty of space I hope that these flights remain a viable proposition.
African airlines haven't been "enlightened" to allowing phones to remain on in flight mode
