I have just returned from Africa with several flights in eastern and South Africa, all in Y.
The best flights in terms of in flight service were two flights JNB-KGL (Kigali, Rwanda) and return with Rwanda Air. Rwanda Air have several 737-700NG aircraft and the food and drinks service was very good in comparison to the typical Y fare. On neither flight was the plane anywhere near full. While this allowed for plenty of space I hope that these flights remain a viable proposition.
African airlines haven't been "enlightened" to allowing phones to remain on in flight mode

Nice. An African airline that ISN'T on the EU restricted list. Had you checked that before travelling, or were you going anyway as it was the only option?

I hadn't checked the EU list but it turned out that all the airlines we flew on didn't have an issue (SAA, Kenya Airways, Rwandaair and Precision Airlines). Having said that I found out last week that the Precision Airways aircraft (Reg 5H-PWA) we used between Mwanza - Kilimanjairo - Nairobi, an ATR72, had been repaired after it was "substantially damaged" at JRO a year earlier in a runway excursion following a diversion after one of its engines failed. Looking at the aviation safety database there have been a few incidents in Africa of runway excursions,m crashing into terminals after a plane has successfully landed following an engine failure - looks like African pilots have had limited experience in asymmetric flight operations after touchdown.
