Worked for me BNE-MEL-BNE next week as a WP, all on Qantas and booked through Qantas web site.

Worked for me in PE on BNE-LAX and LAX-BNE for July on the 747 to get the exit row. Hope it sticks but looks to be in the system at the moment.

Worked for me to grab A380 F seats on a J award to HKG later in the year, where F is not sold but offered to WP and above. :D I'll be WP when taking the flight anyway, but wanted to grab two particular seats before they got snapped up!

Tried to get a seat for a family member (no QF status, bought cheap Y seat, so could not select any seat unless paying $35) for LAX-SYD in a months time. Expertflyer seat map showed blocked, occupied and available seats for the flight. I pulled up the booking on UL website OK, but it only showed 8 seats available for selection :( - bassinet position or non reclining seats on last row of the bus!

If LAX/SYD is a 388 then I can confirm that the last row does indeed recline. Have experienced 86H on QF12.

My non working flights were also booked via Amex travel, so that might explain it.

Ended up ringing Qantas and talking them into giving me the seats I wanted as I’m traveling with an Oneworld Emerald colleague on a separate PNR.

So have tried a multi leg booking booked through Qantas with a mix of Qantas and Dragon Air and it comes up but for the life of me i cannot see where to select my seats.

I went into manage booking?

Click on additional services and then select "Seat"

I have been using this successfully for a while now but went to assign a few new bookings today and no assign seat service. Is it just me? :(

You are right, something has definitely changed and this facility no longer works,

Yes access blocked and I noticed all my 23J bookings on A330 have been changed to 25B

I know they have changed as I moved 737's to Row 4 and all 330's to 23J and I never pick 23B as per serfty suggestion in case swapped out to 737!

Row 4 has stuck though

Booked flights yesterday and went to assign seats to discover the option wasn't there anymore - looks like it has been closed.

Oh well, was fun while it lasted :(

I used this hack the other week when flying MH in Y. Was able to select an exit row on the first leg, and a preferred seat up front on the second leg. Would have had to pay a fee to do this on the MH website but no fee through the Sri Lankan website. Morally questionable, I know.

How long before the flight did you do this, and did it indeed stick all the way through to getting a boarding pass?
In my experience it's possible to select the seats on the MH site, but not pay. The seats will be allocated to you, but after a few days they disappear. It would be great if there's a way around this ;-)

I selected my original seats around the time when I made the booking, a few months ago. A few days before the flight I went back onto the MH website and the seats I had selected were still there. Then I remembered reading this thread and came back to it. The last few posts indicated that the trick no longer worked but I tried anyway and it stuck. Five minutes after changing seats on the Sri Lankan website I went back to the MH website and it reflected the seat change there too. I was half expecting to have different seats when I went to check in, but all was in order.

It certainly seems to work but I am concerned about privacy as this clearly means someone sitting in the Sri Lankan res call centre can bring up my booking, which has nothing to do with that airline, and check out all the personal info loaded into my booking via my QF FF membership.

It is common for carriers on the same alliance to be able to access any booking from member carriers.
You can also retrieve your QF booking on QR, AY, RJ MMB for example.
