I need help understanding routing rules for a xLFFA1 fare I am looking at MEL-HKG. The details below are straight from EF. This shows a YLFFA1, but equally applied to B, K, M or V classes from what I can see.

Y is not that much more expensive than some of the discount Y options, so the extra SC's would be useful (employer funded trip).

Essentially I want to fly MEL-HKG return, and probably via SYD for the extra SC's. What I am trying to understand is all of the different routing options listed for this fare. This is no doubt straight forward, but is the first time I have really paid much attention to routing details.

MEL-SYD-HKG
MEL-SIN(CX)HKG
MEL(QF/BA)SYD/MEL-BKK/MNL(CX)HKG
MEL-BKK(CX)HKG
MEL-SYD/MEL-HKG
MEL-BKK/MNL(CX)HKG
MEL-HKG or MEL-SYD-HKG are straight forward and I understand the airline options (QF/BA/CX) for different legs.

I assume that MEL-BKK/MNL-HKG means routing can be either through BKK or MNL.

I am not sure of meaning of entries such as MEL-SYD/MEL-HKG or MEL(QF/BA)SYD/MEL/BNE-HKG

Does the published fare apply to all of these routings listed above (apart from difference in taxes)?

Thanks

:confused::confused:

AAA-BBB/CCC-DDD/EEE

This means that on the fare to get from AAA to DDD or EEE you can go through either BBB or CCC, not both.

e.g. AAA-BBB-EEE is valid, AAA-BBB-CCC-EEE is not valid.

Note that unless AAA-DDD/EEE is also listed, routings MUST go through BBB or CCC, i.e. AAA-EEE is invalid.

MEL-SYD/MEL-HKG

Here you can get from MEL to HKG via SYD or directly.

MEL(QF/BA)SYD/MEL/BNE-HKG

Here you can fly BA or QF to connect MEL to BNE or SYD to get to HKG, or go direct MEL-HKG.

Thanks Serfty, much appreciated.

So the published fare ($1,866 in this instance for the YLFFA1) would hold for any of these routings?

The base fare will be the same, but the taxes and surcharges will vary depending on the routing.

And most online booking engines will balk at the particular routing (some are smart enough though if they have a multi-city booking engine) so you may need to use a travel agent who might charge you a booking fee.

The fuel fines are the biggest issue. Just adding one sector could increase the "taxes" by quite a bit.

Cheers. Booking would be made through our TA, so desired routing would be possible - just a question of how much those extra taxes add to the base fare.

Best routing would get me about 220 SC return on the YLFFA1 fare, which would be reasonable earning for a Y ticket to HKG.

Which routing would earn 220 SC's?

MEL-BNE-HKG return in full Y would earn 180 SC's.

When interpreting the routing rules I was thinking that I could do the following:

MEL-SYD 439 miles 20 SC
SYD-BKK 4662 miles 60 SC
BKK-HKG 1049 miles 30 SC
------------------------
Total (one way) 110 SC

But now not so sure....
