Have started to put together the itinerary for our visit to Italy next May/June.

My wife and I will be travelling back to Rome on a Saturday for our 10.00am departures out of FCO on the Sunday morning. I was wondering if people would suggest that I stay in Rome City on the Saturday nite or take advantage of staying at one of the airport hotels and thereby reduce the transfer time to the airport in the morning.

10am is late enough to make it easily from the city centre. If you do want to stay close to the airport, the airport hilton is connected (covered walkway)

When I was in Rome a couple of years ago, I caught the train from Rome to FCO.

IIRC, it was only around a 30 minute journey and was comfy enough.

The train would mean leaving Rome around 7am, maybe 7:30 at the latest. Do-able, but as per anything, train strikes could occur at any time or other track problems could occur leaving you stranded in Rome.

Limo, taxi and other options are also available, but as I recall fairly exy (of course depends on your definition of exy!).

Rail strikes in Italy  . Now that's a novel idea. Let's see, I had one train journey deparing from Rome and out of that sample I have experienced cancellation due to strike on 100% of trips.

And of other rail journeys in Italy, I make it 75% delayed by more than 2 hours for various reasons.

Thanks NM for relating that experience. I don't think internal flights within Italy are any better. I happened to check out Alitalia's web site and there was something posted there about airline strikes.

I have slightly better stats - 2 out of 2 (FCO-Rome // Rome-FCO) ontime and not cancelled. Plus a few days of subway use without issue. But I believe there was a strike a few days later!!

Strikes would have to be one of the concerns when travelling in certain European countries, but if you're not willing to accept that possibility, other plans need to be made for transfers, flights, public utility/transport usage etc.

My recommendation is that you stay in Rome and have a wonderful last night. I always get my Airline ( you could ask your travel agent) to organise a car transfer that will get you there in plenty of time. Taxis are very expensive and risky if short of time.

I have always taken a taxi to FCO and pretty early in the morning - usually very little traffic even on weekdays and can get there in 20 mins sometimes.

On the other hand when connecting from another (usually domestic italian) flight I have stayed at the Hilton at the airport - it is very handy and a pretty nice Hilton at that - pool and everything! Rooms I have been given are usually quite spacious.

If for a personal trip I would agree with the recommendation of staying the night in Rome and training/taxiing in early on Sat morning for your flight. But be vigilant and if there are any signs of a strike or anything of the sort, be ready to switch to an airport Hotel.

I'm actually arriving at FCO 13/10. I opted to book at Hilton a/port prior to departure just for the reasons you express as concerns. I'm happy to report back when I return the 26th.
Keeping fingers crossed there are no train strikes as I'm travelling by eurostar to Venice. Knowing no italian I dread thinking how I will manage if there are strikes.

I'll be very interested to hear how your travels go, especially your ES trip to Venice. Like you we don't know any Italian and are planning to use the trains to get around. My wife and I are going to be in Italy for 16 days and we're meeting with out TA today to plot-out out itinerary.

Thanks to everyone else for posting their tips and suggestions.

My experiences were not on the airport rail link. My strike-affected trip was Rome to Venice (ended up arriving about 5 hours late). The other delays were Pisa-Rome, Venice-Milano, and Milano-Luzern. Hmm, the only one that was resembling on-time was Ventimiglia (connection from Monaco) to Pisa.

A postscript to my previous post. I am staying at the city Rome Hilton upon arrival as HHilton member. I booked a limo for arrival at FCO. I'm certainly not flush but does anyone know if I will be able to claim on my tax deduction as this is business trip. Or am I being unrealistic in even expecting it. All new for me.
Thanks again,
trish

If it is a genuine business trip then to my way of thinking you should have no problem in claiming it. HOwever, you're probably best discussing such matters with your accountant who would be the best person to advise you.
