Just to ensure my understanding is correct, may I ask.....

If I requal for gold (400Scs) well before my review date, but fail to reach plat upgrade (1000Scs), are the balance of the SCs simply lost at review date? EG. if I achieved say 750SCs by my review date, I will have easily retained gold, missed out on plat by 250SCs but will those extra 350SCs (over and above gold requal) be then lost......ie not count toward my gold requal for the next year? (assuming I don't reach that magical 1000 next year either).

I'm thinking if that is the case, then using the rolling system early in the next qualifying period and push for plat, would at least see me upgrade a tier (hence effectively not lose them) and have the review date reset. Either that or family pool to my wife to get her to either silver or perhaps gold rather than just see them evaporate.

On your Velocity Account Summary page, click on "Show Detail" under "Upgrade to Platinum" and it will detail your rolling SC, how many points you need on a rolling basis.

It is my understanding that the SCs will stay in your account for one year after you earn them then they drop out of your account. The review date is also rolling, so you can hit plat the day before it or 2 days after it. The only thing that will change on your review date is the SCs that were credited to your account on that day a year ago will disappear.

Say you are starting from scratch, if you earned Gold in the space of 3 months that means in the following 9 months after you will not lose any SCs but then in the 3 months prior to renewal your SC balance will drop off.

The way to effectively save those extra 350 SCs is to earn Plat before too many of your other SCs expire.

Go to your Velocity account and click the show detail link as seen in the pic below.

I hope I make some sense!

The way I get my head around their (confusing) system is -

  • rolling dates on the way up (to platinum, and all stages in-between)
  • fixed dates for renewal or soft-drop (plateauing at, or on the way down from, any status level)

So if you soft-drop from platinum (or re-qualify gold) in a fixed membership year, that won't negate the rolling 12 months allowing you to head back up again, a month or even a few days later.

Thus, when you are heading up the status ladder, they are continually monitoring the (precise to the day) last 12 months of activity. (But on the way down, or maintaining the same status level, they look at the membership year (last 12 months) only at the fixed status reassessment date.)

That's about the best explanation of it I've heard since they introduced it!

Agreed!

This part I don't think is right. My understanding is the review date is fixed until such time you climb to a higher status. The credits stay for a year and accumulate for the sole purpose of a) retaining current status in current year; and b) climbing to the next status level if possible.

This means you must physically earn at least the requal credit amount (400 for gold) in the review year or else they will have departed your account by the next review date. Sorry, I know that's a mouthful and I wish I could explain my understanding more eloquently but to extrapolate the example I gave above........
2011/2012 review year........earn 750SCs which is more than enough to requal gold, not enough for plat.
2012/2013 review year........IF not enough earned to rise to plat (triggering a new review date) all SCs (including the excess 350) from the previous review year pass the 12month expiry and disappear from the account meaning a complete new set of 400 SCs must be earned in that year......effectively wasting those excess 350 from the previous year, hence my statement that with a review date tally of about 750 is better to spend the extra to gain plat quickly (before previous, early year SCs expire) or else once 400 requal clicks over, family pool to another family member to let them achieve perhaps gold (which in our case would allow guesting of another two people into the lounge....our eldest and her boyfriend when they travel with us)
