Does anyone know of any luxurious rooms available in Brissy for next weekend for the Riverfire celebrations? The Meriton apartments would be absolutely ideal (location-wise) but it seems they sell out rather quick.

We have centurion travel on the case for us, but based on prior last minute requests, im doubtful they will bring anything to the table. A decent balcony is a must, as is a good view of the bridge/river, but as we are so close, it could be a stretch.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Yeah, time is getting close for Riverfire now, and I think most good vantage points will be taken unless you have friends/contacts who can get you places.

Are you sure you don't want to brave the night with lots of Brisbanites at the various main vantage points? eg. Kangaroo Point, SouthBank, Eagle Street Pier Area, before retiring to a luxury hotel room?

Last year I was a guest of a corporate sponsor and had a great time on the corner of the river where I could see down the river through Southbank and up the river past the Story Bridge to the CBD. Twas a good night. A few years ago, I spent the night at a friend's apartment at River Place, which also had great views over the bridge and down through the CBD stretch of the river.

Medina Apartments were advertising dinner packages in their main lounge (which has ok views around the bridge, but I'm not sure how special) when I went past a couple of nights ago - so perhaps they are still available. Other options are dinner packages at places like Jade Buddha, Friday's, Kingsley's etc to see the fireworks and flyover. All should have reasonable-good views from the CBD towards the Story Bridge and beyond.

From a Southbank perspective, hotels like Rydges should be able to provide a good vantage point if you can get a room facing the right way. Not sure if they have balconies or not.

Still, if you are after apartments with a decent balcony to watch the action, I suppose my suggestions may not be that appropriate. Others might have much better ideas.

I'm curious though - you seem to be based in Sydney... what's so special about Riverfire in Brisbane?

Just had a look at wotif and there are plenty of well located hotels available, with river views.

Just had a quick look myself, and nothing really struck me as a good hotel with river views and big balcony. Thinking of my own hotel experiences in Brisbane (not too many, seeing I'm a local!) and thinking about where RiverFire occurs, there wouldn't be too many hotels from that list that you would see RiverFire from with balconies.

But with the current trend of converting units (normally with balconies) into Serviced Apartments / short term hotel equivalent stays, there may be a few which have popped up recently (eg Meriton apartments) as mentioned by the OP.

In other news, it appears the WOTIF "Sssh, it's special. secret etc" hotel is Quay West Suites, which is a reasonable place for people to stay in if visiting Brisbane (not related to this thread really, but just something I thought might be interesting to people reading)

Thanks for the suggestions guys!

Centurion made contact with the Meriton Executive Apartments at the end of the bridge who came through with a room, but $900 for a 1 bed and $750 for a studio?!? - I wasn't surprised at the price, but after reading tripadvisor and seeing that the average room was normally around $200 - I thought we could slum with it the Brisbanites down by the river and stay somewhere off the beaten track, like the Emporium or something. I could go shopping with the money saved - or, have an extremely trashy and expensive night in the valley afterwards :p

Anyway should be a good night!

Yikes! That's expensive.

Emporium is getting good 'boutique' hotel reviews at the moment. Workmate stayed there a few weeks ago for an anniversary and enjoyed the place. Probably 20-30 mins walk from there to Kangaroo Point Cliffs which is a great vantage point. Taxis etc are just about useless due to traffic issues, road closures and the huge number of people around. The good spots at Kangaroo Point Cliffs go early (people start staking out claims at lunchtime!), but you should still get a decent view if you get there later.

Otherwise as mentioned, Eagle Street Pier area isn't too bad for RiverFire watching. Southbank is also ok, but you miss the lighting up/fireworks on the Story Bridge.

Enjoy your stay in Brisbane. The Valley will be pretty busy that night due to it's general reputation as the 'party spot' in Brisbane for the nightclub crew, as well as people coming back into there to celebrate after viewing the fireworks etc.

I watched last years river fire from the AirTrain platforms at Domestic. I was supposed to be at my B-I-L water view apartment at SouthBank; but my booked flight was XLD and I could only take a later one.

I had to head to SouthBank before trying to get a cab out to a 40th Birthday party in the North - not a chance ...

I would have thought that a river view room at the Marriott would be good - though I've never actually stayed in one of their rooms - I would expect that they would have good views - especially of the Storey Bridge.

Yeah they do, but no balcony that I'm aware of - even on the upper rooms. Some of the rooms have views down the river over the CBD, others probably have views towards the Story Bridge (but the hotel is slanted towards viewing the CBD stretch of the river).

But the balcony was (mainly) what I was commenting on. Pretty rare for Brisbane Hotels (that are actually hotels - not converted short stay units )

So how did you go? Enjoy it?

For future reference, the Courier-Mail has listed the best (public) spots to watch RiverFire from:

http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,24266943-3102,00.html
1. South Bank Pros: A popular family place to watch the show, and plenty there to keep you amused in the hours before the action kicks off. Disabled access available.
The view takes in fireworks on the Victoria, the Goodwill and Captain Cook bridges (depending on what part of South Bank you're situated in), as well as the backdrop of the city buildings.
Cons: Trying to get a good eyeline can be a challenge.
Also, despite the public transport options of a train station at each end (South Bank and South Brisbane), a couple of major bus stations (Cultural Centre Busway Station, South Bank) and ferry stops (CityCat services will not operate between 6.45pm and 7.45pm), when you leave the venue along with most of Brisbane you have to be patient and go with the flow of the crowd.
There's an alcohol ban, so if you have a booking at one of the South Bank restaurants, contact them about delivery of your BYOs.

2. Kangaroo Point Cliffs Pros: For views, it's impossible to knock this spot.
You can see the barges in front of South Bank and along to the Story Bridge.
Bring a picnic or visit the food and drink stalls along Lower River and River terraces, Kangaroo Park.
Cons: Transport options are not as good as in other areas.

3. City Botanic Gardens Pros: This is the full surround-sound experience of Riverfire. Spread out a rug, wear something warm and enjoy the barges in front of you and a view of the Story Bridge. Disabled access.
Cons: Not as convenient for public transport as South Bank, but perhaps the better option if you're coming from the north side of the river.

4. Eagle Street Pier Pros: Offers close proximity to the fireworks barge in front of Kangaroo Point and a great view of the Story Bridge.
Plenty of food and drink options. There is disabled access.
Cons: It's not really the place to spread out the picnic rug.

5. Riverside Centre Pros: Grab a spot in front of the Eagle St precinct to get an up-close view of the curtain of fireworks coming from the Story Bridge. Remember, the man who has set up the fireworks displays says the bridge is the highlight of the show.
A section of the footpath running between Boundary and Macrossan streets between the Story Bridge and Customs House at Admiralty Quays has been closed for safety reasons.
Plenty of nearby options for food and drinks.
Cons: Not as much room to set up your base camp as other locations.

6. Captain Burke Park Pros: Long considered a top spot by the locals who turn up in their droves, this provides a great view of the Story Bridge from directly below it and the barges looking back down the river.
Food and drink stalls will also be available.
Cons: Public transport options are more limited here.

7. Wilson's Outlook Pros: Another favoured ``top spot'' with locals, this gives you a view of the "backside'' of the Story Bridge, looking down towards South Bank.
Food and drink stalls will be set up and there also are food outlets nearby.
Cons: The view of the fireworks from the barge is more distant than from other vantage points.

Actually, for once, I think the Courier-Mail has something right!

Hmm... well thats an interesting one. We figured out that: 2 x J QF return SYD-BNE legs would be 64,000 points; however if we were to transfer Amex points to SQ points, we were able to score 2 X J NZ SYD-WLG flights for 70,000 points! I was shocked that such a discrepancy existed.
Anyway - BNE & Riverfire quickly got the dump. Many thanks for everyone suggestions on accommodation - next year we will plan early for Riverfire. A weekend trip to NZ has been great!
