One risk I can see of IAU is a deterioration in service recovery after IRROPS due to less spare take-off ready aircraft.
I can see interior cleanliness being an issue... look at the state of Jetstar planes when the crew have something like 20 minutes to turn the plane around.
Isn't this more a case of the clientele than the amount of time they have to clean the aircraft?
I always carry some disinfectant wipes and wipe down tray tables, buttons and IFE screen and controls. Part of my "enhanced" experience

+1 to that!! ... at the beginning of its flying day an aircraft is rather clean....it's the clientele that 'trash' it over the course of its day... note...i do not understand why it's acceptable for people to leave chewing gum wherever!!!! on an aircraft...dump their rubbish wherever!!! on an aircraft... and dont get me started on what people leave whatever!!! in the toilets.... and if some people in society took more responsibilty for their actions....the rest of us wouldn't have to clean up their mess!!! (oooops ... i digress )

As I've said before, QF really need to keep a couple of the unrefurbed 744s, rather than mothball them.
There have been multiple occasions over the past six months when a 744 has come to the rescue when one of the A380s has struck a problem. With a couple of spare 744s, QF has a buffer. Without no spare aircraft, they are stuffed if something happens.
JohnPhelan, yours is a sensible solution given that these 744s must be fully depreciated, although obtaining spare parts and perhaps personnel with the expertise to fix this particular class of aircraft may become a problem in the next few years.
If you were in charge of maintenance and scheduling at QFi, is the only practical place to base (say) two spare 744s SYD or could one be based in MEL?
Obviously the majority of QFi's major long haul routes commence or terminate in SYD but MEL is not unimportant. <snip>

Do QF even have a 747 crew base in MEL? I don't think QF have had any 747 services out of MEL since HKG went to the 330 (obviously this will change with the new 3x weekly to LAX).
