Rex to fly between Australian capital cities

Got nothing.....Qantas...... from Australian Government...hmm some happy to have blinkers on on some airlines!!

That many repatriation flights paid for & what 100+ to come within next 12 months, plus so many other kick backs under the table!
QF get ample support from Aus gov in so many ways.
And so they should to a degree IMO as they are classified as the National Carrier.

My goodness, "Got nothing!"

Go back and read the context as you have appeared to have missed that in your haste to respond 😂

no no, no haste at all, just used the repat flights as an example, crying over QF getting nothing, poor poor comment, but no surprise.

got nothing, poor QF, haha! back to the shareholder's, alas even they didn't come to the party last time.

National carrier ? Any Australian airline is a national carrier, isn't it ?
Once upon a time Qantas was the Flag Carrier; the preferred airline for Fed Govt travel, and it was government owned. That all changed from 1992 to 1997 when they were progressively sold off. The difference between QF and the others is that QF is required to remain 51% Australian Owned.

QF is now the self-styled "National Carrier", but only when it suits them. OTOH Queensland now has an equity stake in Virgin, and I have seen the entertaining claim that they are Queensland's "national airline".

"Classified" as the "National Carrier", but not in 'normal times', as a majority of us (and those visiting from overseas) travel on airlines that aren't part of the Qantas Group.

Only time we saw it outside Oz since COVID_19 commenced (apart from the NZ travel bubble) was when QFi has been paid by the Feds to do so.

Unlike the excellent efforts of Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways, All Nippon Airways, Philippine Airlines and even Royal Brunei plus more, it didn't 'suit Qantas' to regularly or even intermittently operate passenger aircraft carrying those eligible to or from Oz since about March 2020.

Yes, and also EK and UA (and more recently DL and AA). But most of those carriers (not sure about NH and PR?) have a received substantial amount of government assistance, whilst Qanstar has had to fend for itself, right ? ;)

Most of those carriers either had a form of government assistance to keep the flights ongoing, or is wholly government owned and subsidised. Qantas had very minimal financial assistance from the government (the minimal funding from the government used towards operating largely intermittent charters).

I'm sure that if QF (or VA) had ongoing assistance from the Feds to operate short haul and long haul international flights continuously, they would've continued to do so. Just like UA, DL, PR, SQ and others have continued to do so with their taxpayer funded government handouts.

Anyway back to the topic.....

I had a joyride Rexy jet flight booked this week for fun and it was cancelled 24 hours out - aircraft went tech.... how well did VA1 maintain their jets before they collapsed? Is this a regular occurrence for Rex does anyone know?

A well maintained 737 shouldn’t have any... now you have me worried, did VA1 cut corners on maintenance in their dying days??!!
Not to my knowledge. Every MEL applied to the aircraft was fixed, and even then it was nothing major, the aircraft could continue to operate safely with a degree of redundancy still built in.

Rex on the other hand…of course I can only speak for the Saab…but issues would pile up and there would be MEL stickers everywhere. Things would continue to get deferred and there was always the problem with the de ice boots on the tail plane in winter (every winter).

I’ll leave it with this, every time I walk onto a VA aircraft, the maintenance sheet is fairly clean. That’s not to say that things won’t ever happen. Planes are machines.

Just like cars and even computers. Sometimes for some unknown reason, things just decide to take a holiday themselves.

Take of that info, what you will. But of course VA got rid of the older ones. Makes business sense right? They now have a much younger fleet on average and better for insurance.

Also to add every airline has a 'black sheep' in their larger fleet, generally amongst the oldest of the fleet. QF also has their oldest 737s going tech every now and again.

Of course Bain were going to leave out the oldest aircraft aside (from both the leased and mortgaged (formerly owned) fleets). They may be a PE firm, but even they know they want reliability.

The oldest leased VA 737s were returned to 'owner' and the oldest mortgaged (formerly owned) 737s met the same fate as the 777s and were simply handed to the banks.

Its Sunday / Weekends. I would assume most of the traffic are largely low yielding between the $39 fare brackets to face brackets just under $100.

Wish airlines etc. would stop saying 12am & 12pm, as no such thing & can be confusing for punters, ie. midday or midnight & if midnight, which day ? They should say 11.59am or pm (1159, 2359)
Agreed. Out of ZL, VA, JQ and QF, only QF displays 24 hour time on their booking page. ZL does use 24 hour time on the flight status page though.

Looks busy on the MEL-SYD run tomorrow
For everyone. Sydney are about to defeat Collingwood at the MCG which game would have generated a lot of traffic.

Wondering if Rex sold off all their seats at $39. QF offering e-deals seats at $200-443, VA starting at $399 with several flights sold out in Y, and while JQ have a couple of cheap flights they have a lot of expensive ones also

Well yesterday, which admittedly was a Friday, they seemed to have some OK flights on MEL-SYD, was full in business on all flights, and the flights overall had an average load factor 82-85% (depending on whether they used the 170 or 176 seaters). Didn't check the other direction.

I think they sold every seat for $39. My old folks purchased one of those seats earlier in the week and only 2 flights were sold out, the next day 4 sold out. The fare prices never went above $39. They got a seat for $39. A few hours later the flight they purchased went sold out.

It looks like yield is down the toilet and it’s just a matter of filling seats and drumming up some business. I think it’s possibly a wise move at the moment.
