Headline is presumptuous, but REX today publically floating the possibility of operating between state capitals using aircraft no longer required by other/former airlines...
Deputy Chairman John Sharp suggesting $200 million (capital raising from shareholders?) would do it

It's an interesting idea, and could fill some of the void if no buyer is found for VA. And it could inject some new life into Rex, which has an ageing fleet and no suitable aircraft to replace it. But I personally can't really see this happening.

Perhaps REX should utilise this $200m by upgrading their current fleet offering.

I'm no expert, but aren't all airlines in AU still trapped by the fact that no modern aircraft are being manufactured that fit into the niche that is economically viable for the dozens of very slim routes and landing/airport security fees domestically in AU; thus they are all forced to fly old planes and buy old planes for spare parts to service smaller towns/regions?

Maybe the remnants of Ansetts subsidiaries can rebrand as Ansett. :p

Unless someone owns the brand name after the liquidation?

According to ASIC, the suite of Ansett names are available for use as the previous registrations of the names have expired. (Aside from Ansett Aviation Pty Ltd which belongs to the training/SIM organisation that still trades today.)

Previously this report about the name was published in 2012

“Ansett” will have déjà Vu for many.

Owned by overseas airline
AusGov refused to bail out
Went bust
Took years to return most of employee entitlements.

Some from Ansett went to VA

If VA goes bust and is liquidated, don’t be surprised there will be a “Virgin” levy on the flying public to fund the Govt’s employee entitlement protection scheme (remember the $10 Ansett tax?)

I’m still missing a load of Ansett points

You & I paid for the employee entitlements via a long-time flight ticket levy.....

These days there’s a FEG instead

Thanks to Stan, bro of John

I agree I wouldn't fly in those old Saab tin cans if you paid me. By the time they retire them, they will have been flying for 35 years. They can't even keep the propellors in-tact. I'll pass flying on anything run by Rex.

Rex has no plans to upgrade its fleet, and only in recent days has confirmed that SAAB will still support their planes for years to come. The US military uses them. Obviously running and owning (ie. not leasing) only one plane type of the perfect fit for the routes it does, has been a major contributor to its regular profitable operation.
I understand that if they start a capital city business, they will be using narrow-body Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s.

Have you flown in one? It's a huge step back in time, in fact a step back 20 years ago and they've not spent a cent on refurbishing the insides by the looks. They are pretty dire.

Haven't been in one for around 4-5 years but flew with them about six times in quick succession. While not flash, I have flown in planes presented in much worse condition (cabin-wise) in Northern America from some big name companies (United Express, American Eagle, Alaskan)

Funny old business, the airline business. REX have been seeking Government assistance as they were going bad and had a lot of nasty old competition from the big red guy and could not compete. I have not flown with them since Qantaslink introduced the Port Lincoln service as their customer service was unbelievably bad but we had no option but to suck it up. Just hope this mob do not get into the major routes but if they do then they will fail.
