Sometimes Im able to snare a Award/Reward seat for a outgoing sector but unable to find same for a suitable return date. The price for a paid one way flight on the return sector would normally be about the price of a return ticket. Causing me to cancel award seat and just buy return ticket.

Is there a way to get around this and pay for ideally half of a normal return ticket as I am returning albeit outgoing on award and return on paid?

International flights particularly as Dom flights not affected.

Hunt around on sites like Zuji or Expedia until you find a one way fare that you are happy with. Also some airlines have reasonable one way fares on particular routes, so it's worth checking airline websites too. It is time-consuming so you may decide it isn't worth the trouble, but I have ended up with fares I am happy with this way.

There is also the JQ option for one way fares.

Many airlines only offer discount seats as part of a return. One-way flights are often only available in the full fare category.

Many members buy a return ticket from their destination, I assume if they know they will be back within the usual 12 month validity period. It's often cheaper than buying a return ticket from Australia. I haven't personally done it.

I have thought about that. However i usually dont know what the return date (back to destination) is so far in advance and I think the airline may not have released those seats either
