From black holes to revelations.

Three years ago, Virgin Blue's IT department was overloaded with demands from the business they couldn't meet, struggling to support hundreds of applications and generally feeling like "order takers" rather than innovators.

"IT had become a roadblock to the business," says Virgin Blue IT Operations Manager Kevin Joyce.
"We were no longer respected. We were a black hole where ideas went to die."

Virgin Blue had become a victim of its own success.

An interesting article. Seems like JQ could take a page out of their book, as their systems are surely lagging…

You might want to remove your email from the end of that URL.

In what way Sam?

:-| In the way that they fall over at the slightest hint of demand? Or is that a feature these days :p

From the way that article ended, it seemed as though the improvements were ongoing and hadn’t been completed yet. Though I guess they’re always improving things or they’d fall behind.

I guess you are referring to the website falls over during massive demand such as 1c fares etc... who's doesn't?

When I consider IT, I think of the website last of all I guess, sure it is a portal as such, but to me the IT is the check in, the electronic tie in across the network, the ability to print luggage tags correctly (:!:).. all those things, as I said, the web site last of all.

All my flights (touch wood) I have had with JQ, their IT system has never let me down...

Would be interesting to see how the Qantas site would fare if they had a 1c sale ; I have a feeling it may do as well as JQ's

Air Asia's booking website certainly falls over when they start one of their sales. Actually, they don't really fall over, just become incredibly unresponsive.

But mostly things are isolated to the booking engine - you can often achieve other things. And guess what, LCC's are LCC's, and their IT is based around the premise of Low Cost - they don't aim for 100% uptime. 95% is good enough for them.

Yep, I was reading between the lines on your comment :p

Can you imagine the hell to pay and how many new posts per hour (pph ) complaining about the ****e service on the QF website if someone hacked it and started a 1c fare sale :) HAHAHA

Mr!

After saying that, low and behold, look what appeared at qantas.com :!: LOL

I guess there is a lot more to IT yes, and as for never letting you down, they haven’t ever let me down when I’ve flown with them either ;) but I have been unable to book several flights because their website was unresponsive, but then they weren’t my flights yet :p

It amazes me that people are dumb enough to do this sort of thing on work computers in a large organisation (or in a small company that expressly forbids it). . I can recall seeing people 'marched' from a big four bank i used to work at back way back in the 1990's for doing this. Maybe they can't do it at home because their better half will find out! :p

Some may say it's better off to get 'busted' at work than 'busted' by SWMBO!
