Hi All, I have used FF with Qantas to travel to the US. As the return flight was not available at the time -12 months in advance was required for the outbound flight. When the flight is then available we have to pay 10000 points to amend the booking to make it a return flight. This seem svery unfair as we are penalised for something outside our control. Any ways around this?

Hi MichaelJames , welcome to AFF.

One good trick is to book the return as a separate one-way award - no penalty will be charged.

By the terms and conditions of the Qantas FF program you would be up for a 5000 point pp re-issue fee if, in an existing QFF award booking, you change
  • Class,
  • Carrier or
  • Segment(s).

There is such a thing as a re-validation fee of 2½K QFF p.p. points if you change dates/times only. A common strategy is to book both the outbound and a "dummy" return, then book the actual desired return when it becomes available (SG and above avoid the revalidation fee in these cases).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

No airline takes bookings more than 12 months before a flight. Any award flight is not guaranteed, so a return award may never be available.
You can book one way awards with QF
10,000 points to change an award booking ?? How do you calculate 10000

Hi FF wanted to charge us 2 travellers booked at the same time 5000 each. After protracted arguments they let us of with 5000 for the 2 flights. Cheers MC Sam James
That's a Shame ...

There is no penalty at all for having one-way flights in two separate bookings. (Actually it may be cheaper for having two bookings).

e.g.
  • MEL-LAX in WHY is 48000 QFF points and $223.79.
  • LAX-MEL in WHY is 48000 QFF points and USD101.47
  • MEL-LAX-MEL is 96000 QFF points and $385.11
Cheers ...
