I thought with the discussion on seating, I would pass on this reply I received from qf. My query was that I was confused why, now being gold, I wasn't pre-allocated one of the premium blocked seats. Doubly confused, as previously silver, I usually got the bulkhead row.
Dear .......
Thank you for your email.
We do try to accommodate everybody’s seat choice on our international fights. As you know, you can ask in advance for a particular seat or type of seat (like a window seat). However, this does depend on the seat still being available. Even when you have been pre-allocated a seat, we sometimes need to rearrange the seating for security or operational reasons. While we do our best to re-book you to a seat similar to the one you held, we cannot promise it will be exactly where you would like.
On heavily booked flights, we save a number of seats and only allocate them during the check-in process, just before departure. This way we can usually solve any last minute problems; like a family with small children who need to be together.
