Renting from Hertz in the US

I have a quote from hertz in Denver (which is surprisingly good) for 2 weeks car rental. It includes LDW and they know I'm gold and Australian. My travel insurance covers me for $4,000 worth of excess. I wont be using any fancy credit cards.

Do I have sufficient coverage in case of accident?

depends on what you mean by coverage? In terms of the car itself, AFAIK, LDW covers you for any damage to the vehicle, from a scratch to a write-off.

In the US, there is no such thing as an 'excess' - if LDW/CDW is included/purchased, you are covered for loss of/damage to the vehicle, with $0 excess. Therefore, your credit card excess cover is useless in the US.

However, there are a number of other 'insurances' in addition to CDW/LDW that are recommended (I would not hire a car in the US without them):

TP - Third Party cover for damage/injury
LIS - Liability Insurance Supplement (also called ALI - Additional Liability Insurance)
Unisnured Motorist Protection - as the name suggests

Hertz usually provides Australians with a packaged rate in the US which includes all required cover (CDW/LDW, TP, LIS, Uninsured Motorist Protection), with $0 excess.

If the above is not included in your quote, it will likely substantially increase the cost when you add them at the counter (refer Hertz website for details of costs).

If you don't have a US auto policy then you absolutely need the additional liability protection insurance (it's ILLEGAL to drive without liability insurance and if you get caught you WILL be ARRESTED and sent to JAIL if you don't have it... then you will need to play the bail bond game to get out). With every city and state in the US in serious fiscal conditions they are getting very aggressive with folks driving without proper insurance coverages.
