I just realised I have been overcharged from a rental at ADL airport last week - by about $10.

I rang up to investigate, they told me it was a fuel charge. I told them it was impossible, I filled it up at the airport, and no more questions asked, they are refunding it.

So in summary, they may muck you around, but if you question them they'll fold every time.

Good customer service really.

Which rental company :?:

Hertz

Interesting. We tend to use Hertz these days due problems with Europcar.

Which is where I started this thread.

Re: Rental Cars - Europcar.

I am travelling to Adelaide in March for 5 days. Usually I book an Avis car, or failing that Thrifty.

However the quotes I have had for a Corolla Auto or similar using whatever discount vouchers I have are:

Avis $306
Thrifty $262
Europcar $197.

After reading this thread, and having never used Europcar, I guess I am wary of using them.

Do any of you have opinions in this regard?

Thanks.

Budget mixed up the vehicles and charged us for the fuel. We returned it full, but charged about $80 to our card. The car we rented didn't even have a big enough tank to hold that much fuel :D:D

It took ages to get it sorted, but they refunded it eventually.

And then they charged us about $30 too much on another occasion.

We haven't used Budget since.

I'm currently in Florida and being driven mad (no comments) by 'National' who have charged an extra $9.99 per day for 22 days for my coworker who should be free.

They also have the drop off location wrong. So far no suitable response after many phone calls and several emails!

I've used Europcar in Europe without problem.

If you've checked the T&C's of their offer and found it to be OK, then go with them (why wouldn't you?).

I personally have always used Hertz when in ADL due to best price, and better cars and have never had any problems.

I had a bit of a drama with Europcar in Hobart about a year ago. I hired a Magna for 2 days while I was down there (not an easy place to get around otherwise) and upon returning it was advised I would be charged $200 for 2 stone chips on the front bumper. I disputed it and they took me out to the car and managed to find two tiny little stone chips that I honestly wouldn't have even noticed (so who knows if I did it or if someone else did it). Anyway, I stood my ground and they didn't charge me (I mean come on, stone chips on a car in Tasmania - it's gonna happen).

I think these companies just try to throw these things at people in the hope most won't dispute them. If you make an issue of it, they'll probably be inclined to forget about the whole thing.

Looks like Europcar Hobart Airport are trying to pull the same thing on me, albeit ~$60 on my credit card for a chip on the front bonnet. Sad thing is only hired the car for ~8hrs in Hobart for the OzFest do. It's a pain to even try to get in contact with some management there, as the two people that I have tried contacting are currently on holidays.

Worst case I have to pass the charge onto the insurance company (WebJet), but it seems like this franchise is trying to get away with too much. In any case, I will be writing a formal complaint letter to both Europcar Hobart and the head office.

In any case, this is the first time, after 22 days (11 separate contracts) with Europcar that I've had a problem.

danielribo, if you could PM me with your rental agreement details, so that I can mention the problem in my letter, it would be appreciated.

Just got a call from the Manager of Europcar Hobart, and they've agreed to wear this charge, and so the money is going back on my credit card.

On another good note for Europcar, in Queenstown, I booked a rental using the NZSNOW08A code which includes discounted Ski Passes for each day of the rental. When we picked up the car, the coupon books hadn't arrived (since it was the beginning of the season). They were happy to refund the difference back unto my credit card, when we returned the car.

Seems like being a frequent car renter with one company has its benefits after all. :D

Hi futaris, I very happy to see Europcar took care of you. A stone chip would seem to be a ridiculous charge considering it's normal wear and tear rather than driver error.

Thanks again for a great time as the third wheel on your record-setting Oz Fest visit!

Keep your very useful NZ tips coming as they are going to be very handy for many of us here and on FT. ^

If you manage to find some decent value with Europcar, good for you!
(I'ĺl be looking for the Hertz double-upgrades, which are well worth it!)
