I have recently tried to get a business class FF flight from MEL/LON/MEL. I had enough QF FF points, however, flights on the QF internet FF site were not available. I checked with BA and their QF codeshare flight had available FF seats.

However, Qantas would not allow me to access this, saying that I could only access QF flights, which were not available.

Can anyone tell me what is the story with using QF FF points to purchase tickets with another OneWorld carrier. Do you have to go via Qantas and rely on them having access to an allotment or such or can you book direct with the OneWorld carrier?

Thanks.

Unfortunately you can't purchase tickets using QFF points.

Each carrier releases a limited number of award seats on each flight which can be accessed using FF points. While there are available award seats you can use FF points to make an award booking.

Nothing you can do if there are no award seats available on a flight, other than looking for alternate dates, and it doesn't matter that there are seats still available for purchase on the flight.

Occassionally Qantas have been known to release additional award seats, only for flights operated by QF on QF metal and no codeshare flights, for high status frequent flyers, eg Chairmans Lounge or Platinum.

You can book on other carriers, that is not the issue, however the QF T&Cs do not permit booking of award flights using codeshares (except with a few very specific cases).

So to book an award on BA, there has to be availability on the BA flight number

Have you tried going through the Q operator to check availability?

I recently booked 2 award return business class flights MELB-LON-ROME for travel in June 08 and first tried the QFF internet award booking service only to find absolutely nothing listed or available.

Interestingly, when I then rang the Q operator there were quite a few options listed on her screen including BA and Cathay Pacific flights.

Well worth the 2500 points per booking it cost me as the operator was quickly able to bring up all the alternatives.

I have to say that I've given up on the internet award booking option as I can never get 2 seats on the same plane...same date
