Recommend me a point-and-shoot camera

I love taking photos with the iPhone and quality is mostly great but as I use a cover with a strap (often leaning over precarious places like balconies) then taking a flash is impossible unless I quickly remove the cover which spoils the moment. Now it's 59 days until a Singapore exit so am on the hunt.

There is a Sony DSC-HX90V on a well known auction thingy. It ends tonight and is in the low 3 hundreds, meant to be as new, used twice, not mine, don't know them, if this against guidelines, please delete!

Ended up with the Panasonic TZ70 camera - familiar with the Panasonic controls and don't want to spend time relearning so was able to start using very quickly. From the good guys seemed to be the best price. Syncs really well with the iPhone too.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a particular small tripod.

Also - for the people who bought the Sony HX90V do you have any troubles with trying to do a panoramic shot - it regularly gives me an error on this

TIA

I haven't tried panorama yet but RooFlyer has recently posted some.

No problem with the panorama function. How does the error manifest itself?

"Could not shoot image. Move straight in direction of arrow."

I might just go out and play with it some more but just wondered if anyone else has had this issue

I get that message on my bigger Sony.It is because I am too slow doing the sweep.just repeat and go a bit faster.

I use SONY RX100, it costed almost 500$, it's in lightweight and durable body, but with large sensors

Directory Opus can do that for you. There's a free evaluation trial I believe so maybe try it and see. They do have very responsive tech support as well.

+1.

DOpus is really a "Swiss Army Knife" for Windows users - absolutely brilliant piece of software and Australian-made and published.

Thanks for these hints. I love Directory Opus - so easy to reduce size of photos and search for something

Evaluating the pro so think I'll stick with it when the evaluation runs out

It was possible to get the Sony HX90V for $424 (or the similar but less featured Sony WX500 for $381) in December, with $100 back from Amex (Harvey Norman spend $300 offer) plus $50 EFTPOS gift card via redemption.

Not as good as December, but it's currently possible to get the Sony HX90V for $448 (or the similar but less featured Sony WX500 for $447) with $100 back from Amex (Harvey Norman spend $400 offer) plus $50 EFTPOS gift card via redemption. Unfortunately can't combine with current Amex Paypal offers.

I think I'll give it a miss.

Seems like a good offer to me. $448 less $100 + $50 voucher makes the camera $298. I have the camera and would certainly say it's worth $298.

Seriously, if the sales guy for cameras is telling you to stick with your existing iPhone, then that right there should be telling you something significant!
Save your money on the camera and instead buy a Gorilla Grip tripod for your iPhone from Gearbest or DealExtreme or AliExpress or any of the other Chinese online sellers for no more than $2 in a flash sale. Also buy a Xioami Power Bank 2 and get yourself a silicon case for it too so it doesnt scratch your iPhone. That'll be another $20.

Then jailbreak your iPhone and install PhotoRes app from Cydia. That will open up a whole world of new photo settings within your iPhone you never knew existed that Apple choose to hide from users in line with their walled garden software environment.

I only have an iPhone 4S, but with all the above, I can take photos that are way beyond my former P&S Ricoh R5's capacity. I only tossed my Ricoh in the bin a couple of weeks ago in fact after finally accepting it had no further practical use.

The tiny lens on a phone will never compete with a decent P&S which in turn will never compete with a full sized DSLR.

The main advantage of the phone is the direct upload to social media.

For many phones now you can get a plugin card reader which lets you use the SD card out of a camera
