Hi. I am interested in the newish codeshare between Air New Zealand and Qantas. Does anyone know if QA gold gets reciprocal access to koru lounges in New Zealand when flying Qantas codeshare flights as part of a connecting flight to an Australian destination? AusBT was reporting last year we had reciprocal acces with Air New Zealand, but it appears this is not the case for QA members. Does anyone know if Air New Zealand Gold gets access to Qantas lounges when travelling in Australia? Thanks

If by "QA gold" you mean Qantas Gold, then if you're booked on a QF code share you can access AirNZ lounges before your domestic NZ flights. AusBT article here.

Sorry, meant QF gold.. lol. Interestingly enough I took a regional flight today ticketed with a QF number and on to a trans Tasman flight and it was a big ‘denied’ to Air New Zealand lounge access... from both ground staff and electronically..

On the Trans Tasman flight I imagine you need to use the Qantas Lounge, the koru lounges are just for code share NZ domestic flights no?

Yep, which is why I questioned the ground staff.. they looked in to it when the code share arrangement started and were surprised qantas members didn’t get lounge access in Koru lounges, just thru ticketing arrangements..

The domestic flight in NZ (ticketed under QF codeshare) wasn't departing Wellington by any chance? WLG koru lounge is closed for renovations (until approx December) and the temporary lounges are capacity constrained. NZ has stopped allowing any guest access in WLG in peak periods.

I also assume you only tried to access the lounge at departing airport for the domestic leg (NZ doesn't offer arrival lounge access to anyone, and as noted above for the international leg you'd be directed to the QF lounge)?

Invercargill of all places... decent koru lounge, never really busy..

Even the staff were saying they were surprised Qantas Gold etc weren’t admitted when it was first introduced.. and they read through all the rules just to make sure..

When the codeshare arrangement was released to the media in ausBT mag, lounge access was supposed to be part of the arrangement for both QF and AirNZ gold and above in their respective countries...

To be clear you flew NZ aircraft domestic then Qantas across the Tasman?

Qantas Gold I expect Koru access domestically and Qantas lounge access prior to the Tasman flight.

Basically if you’re on a Qantas plane you go to Qantas lounge and if on NZ plane go to Koru lounge (except on the Tasman where they still compete unless you have NZ status/Koru club as well).

Please feed back to Air NZ. They are pretty responsive on social media.

Yep, flew domestic within NZ then transferred at Christchurch to Qantas for flight to Melbourne. All purchased thru Qantas with QF codeshare flight number. I’ll send a query to AirNZ and Qantas for clarification. Cheers all!

Thanks for the thread. I have the reverse question. Qantas Plat travelling in the opposite direction. Booked on NZ codeshare to Sydney, then trans tasman on NZ.
Qantas lounge for the domestic flight?
And Maybe not first lounge in Sydney, being the next flight is NZ operated and NZ code?

Just asking, as the Amex lounge is Sydney is nice enough. Was just surprised by the lounge access part and never really looked into the codeshare agreement details.

Do you have Gold (or higher) status with Air New Zealand? If so, you would have access to the Air New Zealand lounge in Sydney and the Qantas Club prior to your domestic Australian flight (with NZ flight number).

If you have Star Alliance Gold (not with Air NZ) you would have access to the SQ or NZ lounges in Sydney but nothing prior to your Qantas-operated flight as this is an agreement between QF/NZ and not the whole of Star Alliance.

If you don't have status with Air NZ/*A then I don't think you'd be entitled to lounge access anywhere here based on your Qantas Platinum status. The agreement does not technically give QF domestic lounge access to Qantas FF'ers if you're booked on an NZ coded flight operated by QF.

I have both QF Plat and KF Gold. If I book on a QF ticket and the trans-tasmanflight is operated by QF and NZ domestic operated by NZ, then what lounge do I get access to? I think this is the answer:

Sydney - Qantas First / Business as it is a QF flight number and New Zealand / Singapore lounge as it is a *A operated flight.

Auckland (to Wellington) - NZ domestic lounge due to QF flight number and QF Plat and also KF Gold flying on *A metal

It does get confusing doesnt it.

In Sydney, you would have access to the Qantas F lounge due to your Qantas Platinum status as it's a Qantas operated and marketed flight. You would not have access to any Star Alliance lounges in Sydney.

In Auckland, you would have access to the NZ domestic lounge thanks to your Qantas Platinum status as it's a Qantas marketed flight operated by Air New Zealand. Your KrisFlyer Gold status is not relevant here as you can't access the NZ lounge using Star Alliance status when booked on a QF flight number.

FWIW, your KF Gold status also would not grant you access to Qantas lounges if flying on a Qantas-operated flight marketed by Air New Zealand. That's because this is purely an agreement between Qantas and Air NZ - other Star Alliance/Oneworld carriers (such as SQ) don't come into it.

Your KrisFlyer Gold status is not relevant here as you can't access the NZ lounge using Star Alliance status when booked on a QF flight number.

Actually it is the operating carrier that rules in star alliance. A Krisflyer gold should get into to the NZ lounge (as long as it is designated as a star alliance lounge) as long as the flight is operated by NZ (regardless of the marketing carrier). At least that’s what the rules say.

On the other hand, a KF gold won’t get access to NZ lounge when travelling on NZ code of a flight operated by a non star alliance carrier.

So in summary OWE lounge access is governed by marketing and operating carrier, *A Gold lounge access is governed by operating carrier only. Qantas then add another limb to this by allowing QF Plat/Gold to use Qantas lounge when travelling on Qantas marketed flight regardless of the carrier, plus AirNZ lounge when traveling QF marketed flight operated by AirNZ.

I wonder if the lounge attendant can actually memorise all these rules.
