Recipe to Riches

I tried the Pork & Apple snags this week, they were really good. I went back for another pack this morning but they've sold out.

I really enjoyed them too, and was going to head back but that's sad to hear that they haven't planned for the popularity. Bet you a chocolate-themed product that they make millions of packs of will win in the last week again, despite it not actually being the favourite :p

Was also going to do a taste test, was looking for a cravat! :p

You have to wonder sometimes...

The contenders this week were:

3. [-]Carla's paleo chocolate mousse (with avocado!!)[/-]
2. [-]Kelly's flackers (crackers)[/-]
1. Darcy's chi-iky balls (protein snacks)

In the case of Darcy, they've invited him to the kitchen only to tell him a key ingredient in his product, the chia seeds that also inspire the name, are too expensive to use commercially so he'll have to use coconut flakes. I don't even understand why they invited him if they changed his recipe (and thus the name) before he even started.

They all had issues -
Mousse - Avocado shelf life plus availability (and I suspect cost)
Flackers - Overall cost of ingredients too high
Chocoballs - As noted they ditched the expensive Chia seeds

That said I did see my local Woolworths flogging $25 Chia oil!

Looking forward to trying the choc bombs. Despite his goal of a protein ball seemingly not reached, they look yummy.

Next week breakfast recipes and I heard them mention a fav of mine, Brussels sprouts! :)

This week is breakfast.

We have:

2 Heather's Breakfast ice cream
1 Ricardo's Latin baked beans
3 David's Close-to-no-fat banana bread

The beans should be interesting. I'd have liked to try the not-quite ice cream though.

Next week is "mains".

Anyone try the protein balls?
Was going to but decided that $5.99 for 6 tiny things was ridiculous
(And they ditched the Flackers on cost!)

Ricardo's beans look good, although more than just breakfast

Hmmm. The pulled pork was the only one I was interested in. Curious that it was too sweet.

The balls were really good!

The beans were great as any meal, really nice mix, I'm hoping this is the product that wins!

I think even if the pulled pork had made it through to the final round, they would have ditched it based on the cola, syrup and BBQ sauce mix she required for it due to expenses, like they did for a previous week.

Interested in the lamb kebab, I think it's a good meal, so long as there's more than one a box and doesn't cost too much. Unfortunately, lamb isn't my thing though so shall buy it but only try a small amount.

I think their excuse of too sweet is rather bizarre given she'd already gone through the "taste test" to get there.

I'm not that into most of the winners this year. I've only bought one of them, the sausages, that were on sale as they were reaching their use by date. Had to chuck them anyway as they weren't cooked in time.

I reckon I don't like eating pre-cooked main meals and that's my problem.

You couldn't have frozen them?

If you spot Ricardo's beans hanging around over the next week, I recommend you give them a go. Great for any meal. The use-by is end November so any left will disappear fast but have found it to be the best product thus far. Followed closely by the choc bombs as a snack.

I didn't find them until after expiry date. And processed raw meats like mince are the ones most likely to cause food poisoning so not worth the risk.

I'll look for the beans although I'd be the only fan here.

So tonight we had an eggplant chutney, macadamia sausage rolls and vegetable chicken nuggets.

Those macadamia sausage rolls look delicious!

I don't think it was fair getting adults to judge the nuggets. Kids have a completely different taste requirement.

The pizzas from last week sold out super early.

From what I saw there was very limited stock.

I love the show, but I think the way they handle the contestants in the batch-up kitchen is a complete joke... yes, they want drama, but just a half hour of instruction on the various machines before they got in there would result in much better products. Whether they still screw up their ingredients is up to them.

I agree about that kitchen. It has nothing to do with the quality of the product. They shouldn't even have to calculate the quantities as again, that has nothing to do with their original offering.

Even worse is the show choosing contestants with good tasting recipes, only to tell them when they get to the kitchen they can't use certain ingredients or that things will be deep fried instead of baked. I get it's TV, but I'd probably dummy spit and walk out and give them more drama than they bargained for if I turned up to find out that they knew they were changing my recipe and didn't want to tell me until there was a camera in my face! :p

Yes. They knew it was fried. That's the way they liked it. The same goes with their "don't like the taste - it's too sweet" comment like they did with the recipe a few weeks ago.

Still like the show? :p

I like the potential that someone could get a recipe out there, not sure it would lead to many riches or that it's in the best format to whittle it down though :p

BTW, I've tried the sausage rolls for this week. They're tasty, but there's something off about them I can't put my finger on. I'm thinking it's perhaps a little too sweet thanks to the honey, but I could be wrong? The macadamia chunks I would have expected to be crushed smaller than they are. Chicka found a piece of bacon in hers that was slightly too noticeable :p

I still prefer Ricardo's beans and Darcy's choc-bombs.
