The seared Humpty Doo barramundi with tamarind sauce, gai lan and jasmine rice, that has been available on some flights has received pretty good reviews.

Flew EK long haul the other day. Right near the front on 777. Y Aisle seat in the middle block. Was told only 1 of 2 options available (chicken). Other 2 seats in the block of 4 get served and old mate is eating the other option (fish). Hmm....had a half rack of BBQ Pork Ribs & chips before my flight.

OP maybe your late swap into the direct SYD SIN flight didnt allow catering for your burra main meal request.
Maybe you caught the crew eating that particular dish was his from the start.
Maybe he doesnt eat other meats.
Granted you wanted it, but too many variables to know for sure.
I have been in QF Y and heard crew down back eating with metal cutlery, and it wasnt main meal time either.

You took a late swap on top of the fact that you were on an award ticket, with this combination you have to expect potential catering issues.

The flight crew must eat different meals from each other so that if one setting of food is off then others will not be ill.

hmm, I didnt realise J seats run out of food :(, I am flying J for the first time with Singapore Air and for one of my flights on the A380, I chose the rear seat due to the location and privacy / seat quality. I hadnt thought of running out of food.

If you do "book the cook" through the manage booking part of the website, they will have that meal allocated for you. If you are flying out of SIN there are an insane number of options. needs to be booked more than 24hrs in advance.

Yes I did check that book a cook option, at first i thought it wanst that special as i noticed the flights out of sydney didnt have much variety or choice then i came across the flights out of singapore and it had so much more choice. I think my A380 flight is out of singapore so i better do as you suggested.

Though we have had this happen on 3 occasions-twice for mrsdrron and once for me.We were on paid J tickets, hadn't changed flights and mrsdrron was and still is WP.

Would be unusual to run out of food. What does happen sometimes is that particular options become unavailable.

Full duplicate catering of everything is the province of First.

@lonewolf i had last row in J on Singapore and definitely had all options available and had book the cook for a couple of legs. In fact as not everyone can fit in sweets they offered me both desert options, which i accepted. So there are some benefits in being last. As an aside when my wife and i last flew with them i asked to speak to the head cabin steward. I told him this was my wife's first time in J with Singapore and requested she get the best Singapore service to make it memorable. He guaranteed to deliver and did so, including asking her for her meal choices personally before take off. She loved every minute of it.

I am surprised they even run out of some options as being business, i just always assumed the price is so high that they would make sure they can cater for everyone. First is so hard to book on award as you need to book way in advance and a lot of work places just arent very helpful with that :(.

What did you think of the seats? I hear mixed things, some people were worried its close to the bathroom / crew areas but others said its quite private and good legroom etc. I like the options of multiple deserts :). Hopefully i have a similar experience, I am excited for my first J journey, Although i noticed a lot of my flights are the older seats and not the 2018 seats, but 2013 and 2009 or something like that according to the website.

Qantas don't even do full duplicate catering in First.
As I discovered SYD-DXB.

We had MEL-SIN SIN-CDG and CDG-SIN SIN-MEL all in J, mixed aircraft and age, we were pretty impressed but as neither of us are over 6 feet we had plenty of space. there were A380 A350 and older 777-300Er so had a ball experiencing all they had to offer.
sat 12D in the mini cabin of the 777 great choice
sat 18D and 96D in the 380 both great and the 96D was private , no noise or smell
and 18D in the 350. no problems
some of the seats were looking a little old and worn but still great. You will enjoy regardless i am sure. If it is your first time, speak to the Head steward and tell them it is your first trip and say how excited you are to be trying it.

IMO aside from Book The Cook (BTC) on SQ (and I agree limited options out of Oz - far far better out of SIN) SQ likely has more catering loaded and I doubt you would be disappointed.

As for QF it happens. Award ticket is not the issue. The late change possibly. It's unfortunate as you went from an EK flight to QF, so even a QF pre-order meal was not an option.

These things can happen with last minute changes.

Interesting. How did you feel about that response?

I have some friends that are QF cabin crew. I’ll ask them if this is actually the case.

Either way, I think it sucks that the customer misses out and the crew gets the pick of what they want.
But do the crew preorder the meal?

I had a friend fly QF J from DPS to MEL and they had run out of cheese platters. Her seat was broken and her entertainment didn't work. Not good enough for the money paid. After repeated emails she was offered a paltry 5000 points.
