Rail and Fly

I just tried a few trial bookings and found that end March seemed to be the cutoff. This could be an unwritten 'enhancement' to the QF/EK partnership.

All I can see is that Emirates are also a partner. Why do you think it is an "enhancement"?

As EK fly to more than just FRA in Germany, there is perhaps no longer the necessity to have codeshare train journeys. I haven't seen anything to confirm or deny this, it is just my opinion.

According to the Deutsche Bahn site you must arrange Rail and Fly with your airline. However it is not entirely clear how to do this on QF's site. According to DB you can go to nearly 5600 stations across Germany with rail and fly but previously on the QF site it only mentioned a handful of train stations.

Rail&Fly is a service offered by the airlines and may therefore be subject to additional conditions/restrictions. Please check with the airline or its agent before your flight ticket is issued.

Seems that QF only offered Rail and Fly to a number of destinations.

[h=2]Question[/h] What does the abbreviation TRN for aircraft type stand for? [h=2]Answer[/h] TRN stands for train service. Travel between Frankfurt and Cologne, Dusseldorf, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart is on a train service operated by Deutsche Bahn.

Depends on the published schedule German Rail. The timetable can be as little as 8 weeks between publishing and go live (eg. Winter Schedule for Dec 8 onwards was only published 16 Oct). Also it is generally something to discuss with the travel agent. No points either.

I've not used it as I've flown into MUC, which only has Schnell-Bahn (S-Bahn) connections to Munich East and Munich HBF - kind of like Brisbane Trains without drunks. DUS is similar.
FRA being on the main line makes Rail and Fly awesome though.

I've rarely been able to get it online. There seem to only be limited DB services that also codeshare. Mum has used the codeshares a number of times FRA-Munich, but always booked with an agent, I believe.

I've booked the train separately with DB.

In theory, it only costs 29 euro from FRA to anywhere in GER, and you can use the fastest trains as well! I think this would be a great selling point, but is neglected for whatever reason.

Sorry, but there is a bit of misinformation flying around (pardon the pun) in this thread.

The only way to book Rail&Fly online is through the qantas.de website, which means your itinerary needs to begin in Germany. You then select RAILWAY GERMANY as your departure point from the list of German ports. This will add an initial and final segment departing from QYG to FRA. Post-booking you will receive two emails - 1 from QF with your flight itinerary and 1 from QF/DB with a Rail&Fly voucher for the Rail&Fly segments booked. The voucher includes a "Pick-up number" which you use to print out a ticket from one of the DB ticket machines by entering the code. This can be done from 72 hours before departure of your QF flight ex-FRA. The ticket generated allows you to travel from any station on the DB rail network within Germany to FRA, but can only be used in conjunction with/upon presentation of your QF5/6 itinerary/ticket. The Rail&Fly segment is only valid from within 24hrs of flight departure. Also note these Rail&Fly segments cannot be added post-booking.

What some people have been confusing as Rail&Fly is in fact a codeshare agreement QF has/had with DB. If, for example, you chose DUS or HAM as your destination, one of the options offered through the QF booking engine would have been QF to FRA and then on a specific train to DUS as opposed to QF to LHR and then to backtrack with BA.

Hope this helps you out. I assume that the Rail&Fly offer will cease with the cessation of QF5/6 services in October.

Thank you for the clarification.

So from DE there is rail then fly, but we can't do fly then rail from AU unless it is to a specific codeshare station?

If you book ex-Germany then you can choose Railway Germany as your starting port and final destination on return.

I'm pretty sure the DB Codeshare services will now have been removed as part of the EK/QF tie-up. You may still be able to get them to DUS, MUC or HAM until 31MAR13.

I did another dummy booking with AB but this time starting point outside GER. I still had the option of Rail and Fly despite the flight not originating in GER. Oh well I guess it means I have to give QF a ring.

Make sure they don't hit you with a booking fee!

Very Sad. You can still get code share with EK to GER via DXB, I guess more options, but both QF and EK from what I can find on the net, you have to contact either airline to get the Rail and Fly option. Incidentally QF charges ~29 euros for R&F whereas EK charges $49 Euros!
