If I am viewing a thread, there is no reply field unless I click the reply button. Which makes it hard to refer to what other have said while you are formulating a reply.

Is the Quick Reply function locked out until you get to a certain number of posts?

It can be a little annoying, I often multi-quote many posts as I scroll through a thread, before finally seeing them all lined up and then forget what I was going to say to certain ones :p

I don’t think there’s a quick reply function though. Might be in settings, but never noticed one.

OK, I've just some some sniffing around in the backend of the two forums I am admin on (which both use vBulletin)

The setting is found in:

Admin Cp > Setting > Options > Message Posting and Editing Options > Quick Reply

Is there a reason why this would not be enabled? It's painful as hell not being able to read the thread while typing a reply.

May take some load off the server too as it would negate the need to load the full newreply.php page evey time someone replies

AVC you just need to learn to use multi quote.

I know how to multi quote, but it's still another step.

I am not seeing the link between multi quote and what AVC is talking about.

I know that they use quick reply on FT - I personally don't like it that much.

When you say "refer to what people have written" do you mean to quote or just to look at what they have written?

Basically, look at what they have written.

The only difference with Quick Reply enabled is that the text box is already there at the bottom of the thread instead of just the reply button

If you scroll down while replying you will see all the most recent posts in reverse chronological order. Also if you are having trouble with quoting a post there is a "quote reply" (or something like that) button on the bottom right of each post. Right next to the check box that is used to select a post for multiquote.

When you are on the reply page you can scroll down the page and see what has been posted in the thread previously, if that's what you're looking for?

edit: medhead beat me to it by a minute :)

AVC,

I will make sure this is brought to the attention of admin though I a cannot see the advantage in what you are saying over how the forum is currently setup.

As medhead rightly says you can currently see all recent posts as you type your answer.

Well look at that. So there is. LOL. Thanks.

I'm used to having it the other way around (i.e. Reply To Thread Window under the posts).

Just have to get used to the Left Hand Drive concept is all.

But the page load question still stands

EDIT:
Posted at the same time as Straitman.

The advantage is, is that when you hit reply (or Reply With Quote, or Multi Quote), the server will load a new page (which is the newreply.php page), and it adds a step to posting a reply, as opposed to having the reply field already sitting there on the bottom of the thread.

I have now enabled Quick Reply. Hopefully this will solve some of the issues you are experiencing

Not sure if it is customisable but the box could be bigger - if you quick quote then a lot of the dialog box is already full.

It does make things quicker and easier to go back to the new posts search as well.

Maybe I'm the odd one out but I do not like it.

IMO it was better before the change.

Any other thoughts?

I kinda agree. I think it is a pretty big change to the look and feel of replying to be made within 90 minutes of someone asking a question. Having said that I'm happy to try it out for a while to see if it grows on me (and if I can get used to the changed behaviour). I guess it also saves on system resources (?)

I had in my mind that the quick reply was going to be added functionality, rather than changing the exisitng functionality.

I do rather like it, aside from the box being a little small, and some of the functions missing (although Go Advanced resolves that).

I know on Safari you can customise the size of the text box, to the point that it remembers how big you’ve made it, do other browsers not do this?

I like how when I quote a post the box pops up underneath the post without loading a new page, and when I multi-quote it appears under the last quoted post, allowing me to continue reading the thread.

I did think it would be a choice too, but so far so good. Much quicker way to reply to things.

The box is resizable.

There are now effectively two ways to "reply":

"Reply" / "+Reply to Thread" and "Reply with Quote" - all "Quick".

So basically the only real change is if you wished to reply using the advanced editor (tables, indents etc.) - to do so now requires two mouse clicks.
