Does the WP have to be travelling? Eg could a WP request a seat for a family member who will be travelling by themselves?

Yes you can request a seat for family members travelling alone.

The WP member does not need to be traveling, have released seats many times for SWMBO when flying by her self.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thanks for the quick reply all. Much appreciated!
Cheers

I did this last week. MsChooms needed a flight back from Perth on the cheap and no award availability. I rang QF as a WP and one X fare was released for me. Used my points to pay (but MsChooms transferred the points back to me :p).

Hello brains trust

1) How far ahead have you successfully done this "WP request" for a Classic Award release ?

2) Has anyone been successful in asking for a release of J seat(s) ? Most discussion seems to be about Y seats.

Thanks

1. Anything up to 355 days
2. Yes J and F seats on multiple occasions. I think you'll find most of the requests discussed here on AFF are for premium cabin seats rather than Y seats. There is another larger much more extensive thread on it.

Had great success for our last couple celebratory trips / requests. All in the last couple of months..

2 x J BNE-SYD-JFK return
2 x J BNE-SYD-SCL return

In early Sept I asked for a 'J' seat on the new SYD-SFO service for late Jan. It took about 48 hrs but was releases without issue.

Thanks, PF

I did a search for "WP seat release" and this thread came up first !

Never done this before but it is worth keeping in mind this undocumented optional benefit - just in case.

One thing to keep in mind if requesting the release of an award seat in one direction only, is what fare type you intend to travel back on.

If asking for return flights there's no issue provided award seats are granted both ways however if you only want an award seat released in one direction and you are buying a paid fare in then you need to consider the cost of a one way fare for the return leg.

I rang up the Premium Desk to ask about getting two "U" class seats released for a classic award SYD/HNL and mentioned that I wanted to pay for the sale fare back which was AUD479.00.

I was told that they don't combine such bookings. When I checked the one way fare HNL/BNE it was USD1,400.00 one way which equates to almost 4 times the price in AUD than if that one fare fare component was booked as part of a return journey.

End result is I didn't bother parting with 72K points and AUD500.00 ish cash so paid for a saver fare outbound and requested a points upgrade on that sector so we'll see what happens.

You didn't have enough points for the return trip ??

Didn't want to waste points for a Mark I Skybed on a day flight HNL/SYD which is doable in whY when you can get two seats on the side. Would rather save the points for Premium flights on an A380 somewhere.

Even if we did a one way award in whY separately it would have been 36K points plus USD311.55 in 'taxes'. So to pay AUD479.00 for a sale fare was practically the same dollar amount plus not only to we not burn 36K points we earned 6,800 points and 45 SC (2 x ~ squiggles).

Although JQ have good one way pricing ie no disadvantage whether HNL/BNE is booked on its own or combined with an outbound JQ flights we didn't really feel like travelling on JQ's 788 HNL/BNE with the 3x3x3 seat config in whY. I preferred the 332 with the 2x4x2 seating plus more legroom IMHO than on the 788.
