When using flight search availability, its gives a points + taxes (eg 46,000 + 400 taxes) result.

however, when proceeding to book, the only option that becomes available is a 'total points' price, eg SYD-LAX goes from 46,000 + 400 taxes to 99300 points.

So now have to fork out 99300 + $0.

is it still possible to get the points + pay option?

Have tried this for a few dom and intl routes, and none seem to work.

You need to proceed to the payments page, where you will get the 'points + pay' options.

You will possibly get better value by booking as an Any Seat award.

Log into your account and select award bookings, select Any Seat (not classic) and enter the dates you want etc.

You should get to a payment screen where you can move the slider to choose how much cash vs points to use.

Points plus pay generally has a much lower value per point.

Only problem here is the minimum point spend is higher than with points + pay, so depends what your points balance is. There are also some good deals to the US around at the moment, so you might be better just forking out the cash and adding some more points to your balance for a future trip :)

Is this Virgin or Qantas related?

Virgin - maybe it's browser related?

Have you tried the slider as indicated by oz_mark? Does it 'move'?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
