A couple of days ago my computer suddenly stopped connecting me to a number of internets sites. In particular, Velocity, Virgin, Bigpond webmail and Hilton, which I use all the time.

I've looked at the TLS and 1 and 1.2 as well as 2 are all checked. There is no box for 1.2. This started happening at H-CNS so I though it was a Hilton problem, but I'm now home and it still doing it. Many other sites work just fine so it's not the internet connection. Another thing is that I can access the bigpond and Hilton web page, but I get the message when trying to login. Any suggestions or thoughts....please? (I run AVG and it shows no virus or spyware threat.)

When I get the "This page...." message I try a different browser (Chrome or Firefox) and generally it works.
That said, I have never paid any attention to the information below (Turn on....) so your fault may be different.
Have you tried another browser?

You are not alone with the problem, there has been recent changes with a few browsers where they are not accepting sites that use older forms of encryption.

We have a web based app, that till 4 weeks ago worked in all browsers, now only works in Chrome.

As Buzzard says use a different browser

Tried Chrome. Here's the message returned from the Hilton log-in page...

It likely means that your browser is refusing to connect as the website is trying to negotiate a connection using weak security.

As for TLS 1.2 not being there - that should be available in Windows 7+ for IE - what version of Windows are you running?

(Edit - for Chrome).

Chrome has different settings for TLS than Windows itself.

Try visiting https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/viewMyClient.html and see if TLS 1.1 and 1.2 are shown as enabled. (Under Protocol Features)

I've recently upgraded to IE 10 ( I think it is). Can I roll back to 8.1? 10 is a pain as I can't find anything.

There's a bit of a problem connecting to the site you suggested. From IE.....

and from Chrome....

Sorry, I told a lie. TLS 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 are there and checked.

I am assuming during the install of Internet Explorer 10, that schannel.dll or one of the other cryptographic components got corrupted. Have a look at:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/318378 for how to uninstall/re-install.

Another option is to use Firefox as it uses it's own cryptographic functions (Contrary to my earlier belief, it appears Chrome uses the same functions as Internet Explorer does)

I am also having problems with certain pages but a completely different list and also I can initially connect and only after some time do I get the cannot connect message.Has happened with 2 of my computers-1 Windows 10,other windows 7 but also at work which has windows 7 and firefox (just upgraded from XP).Very irritating as my list includes AFF and yahoo.

I feel your pain. XP was the best platform (IMHO). I still use it on a desk computer so I gather many like us, didn't want to upgrade. Why ditch something that works.

I've been doing a systematic check of my favourites and many are down including Jetstar, Qantas, Europcar etc. I'm also getting a lot of script errors popping up and some other sites (Priceline, Amex etc) aren't displaying correctly, but AFF is no worries. Very odd that it's only just started doing this 3 days ago yet I upgraded to 10 a few weeks ago and didn't have any problems.

My problems are also the last few days only.
Must be those Russians getting close to the underwater cables.:p;)

Loved XP too. The releases since then are classic cases of 'enhancement' so that the end product becomes useless. Palm Pilots did the same, Outlook removed BCM and I really dislike the current Office platforms.

We have had to install installed IE 9, IE 11, Chrome and Firefox on various machines depending on the website they need to go to

I still use XP on my work PC. IE8 too IIRC plus Firefox and Chrome for where IE won't work.
Very happy with XP.
On my laptop I've been trying to upgrade to Windows 10. Keeps failing as some update or other won't well, update. Looks like I may have to stick with 8.1 for now.

My advice is stick with 8.1. I have no idea what are causing these problems, but I did note that the "Update Automatically" box was ticked, so I'm guessing that it did an auto update and stuffed it. There was apparently an option to roll back, but that only lasts 30 days and it's no longer there, so it looks like I'm stuck with it. I tried to download Firefox, but I get the same error message so can't even download that. I'm now getting pretty annoyed. Windows 10 and IE 11 are a coughpy combination it would appear.

In case this might help anyone else in this situation, I just had an IT guru repair my laptop. It turned out to be AVG, Avast and Windows Defender fighting each other! AVG and Avast uninstalled and the system now works as intended. He assures me that Windows Defender is equal to any job that either AVG or Avast did.

Good to see you are up and running again swanning_it.
I may stick with 8.1 as you suggest. As I run Stardock, 8 is a lot like 7.

Hoping he meant Microsoft Security Essentials... which is a solid product

No idea. He said Windows (10) Defender had been merged with something (can't remember what) and it was as good as any???? Comments appreciated.

Should only ever run a single AV product, generally speaking.

Kind of like double bagging your condoms, it's likely to create more problems than solutions. ;)
