I have just reached QF gold and see no prospect of reaching Platinum in this membership year. I thought for a change I would start an AAdvantage account and credit points to that.

I have a work-related trip ADL-MEL this weekend and wanted to get a start by crediting to AA. Unfortunately, this got mixed up in our office booking process and my QFF number was put in. I now realise that the website does not allow a QFF number to be changed to another program number. Can it be done some other way?

Eg, can I ask it to be changed when I drop my bag off tomorrow morning?

Two related questions occur to me:

1. can each flight on a single PNR be credited to a different program?

2. can I see flights in Qantas 'Manage my bookings' but still keep the flight crediting to AA?

Thanks in advance.

If you "manage your booking" by not logging into your QFF account you can remove and then add another membership number. You can also do so at the airport, but if you change the membership number the booking is linked to then it wont show up when you log into that account again.

Another slight tweak is to keep using your QFF number, get your boarding pass - your QFF status will give you a better seat allocation. And then get your number changed to AA in the Qantas Club.

Note there are many reports of problems with this approach where the last changes has not been done properly and people have the flight posting to the wrong account. you have to decide if it worth the risk.

I’m trying to work out the best thing for my dad to do in a similar vein. He has his CX Diamond MPC membership attached to some coming MEL-BNE-MEL discount economy bookings, which will earn him under 500 miles, however if he credits to QF he’ll get 2000.

His number has already given him 6D both ways on a 738, but I wonder if changing his number now would impact his chances of an op-up were there to be availability. I know it’s useless betting on that chance, but at what point would you suggest the number be switched. I was suggesting he just do so in the lounge previously.

In my experience, once the seat selection has been done, it will stick even if the FF details change. The only "risk" is if there is a last min aircraft sub for a different type.

But lets be real, its a 2 hour flight, so does it really make that much difference if he gets 6D or 15D? Personally I would be getting the right FF details into the booking as soon as possible and checking that the unwanted ones have been properly and completely removed.

Status report.

I checked in on my first leg, then asked the QP desk to change to my AA number, which they did without any question. I did not get a new boarding pass printed for that leg.

When time came for the return leg, I used the self service checkin machine at MEL. I swiped my SG card, but it did not come up with my booking. Going through the long way on the machine, I checked in and the printed BP showed my AA number. I then dropped my bag off, showing my BP and my SG card. The CSO asked if I wanted to keep the AA number, or change to QF. I said to keep AA.

I hung out in the QP for a while, but did not have to worry about showing my card because by colleague was a QP member and walked in first.

Today, the first flight ADL-MEL credited 377 miles (Mileage Monkey says 399). I therefore expect the return flight to credit the same tomorrow.

The miles seem low after getting used to QFF 1000 minimum. That said, I understand the redemption rate is cheaper. Should I buy some miles? What is the minimum for a meaningful award flight? Do awards outside the US have to be booked by phone?

Most importantly, do I get a real card now?

No 'real' card until you attain a status.

You must have been in a highish booking class as O earns at 50% miles.
And when you attain status the guaranteed minimum earning kicks in. I think you need Plat status for this.
