QP/JL Wireless Access problems [Fixed Oct 2011]

Red Roo, perhaps you guys should approach Internode to handle the Qantas Club free WiFi. They seem to do a pretty good job with the WiFi in Darwin and Adelaide Airports.

Can't just do one or two airports, not viable and is inconsistant.

No, as in, approach Internode to replace the coughpy Telstra WiFi in all the lounges in every airport. Not just in Darwin and Adelaide. I was highlighting the point that the whole of Airport WiFi that Internode supply in Darwin and Adelaide seems to work quite well compared to the Telstra WiFi in the QC, so they'd probably be a good provider to approach, given they have experience with doing whole-of-airport WiFi, and they do it reasonably well.

Firstly, apologies for the inconvenience.

As noted in another thread, we're currently reviewing Wi-Fi services and we'll keep you up to date with any developments.

Great news Red Roo :) As the wi-fi in LHR BA Galleries F and J is fast enough to allow downloading movies to the iPad pre-flight, might I suggest that this is the minimum standard that QF should adopt ?
Thankyou

Having had follow up when previously reporting this issue, the problem seems to stem from the fact that when qp wireless was set up some years ago, it was designed with the idea that people could connect their laptops.

Now everyone has smart phones and the system has to be overhauled entirely, in every qp.

Presumably a lot of it comes down to cost.

Yet another example of qf telling us they are premium, but not providing a premium experience. I wish they'd fix it - the technology is now pretty cheap, many hospitals have extensive wireless networks - hospitals aren't known for being flush with funds to spend on stuff like wifi needlessly.

Timing is everything I guess. Check out this tweet linked below, Simon Hackett is the Managing Director/Owner of Internode. And he found the WiFi not working in the International F lounge in SYD. Seems he's quite interested in talking to Qantas:

The WiFi facility at QPs is currently up for a RFQ I believe, most locations are struggling with their Cisco 802.11B APs for some reason........

Can report not working in bne Thursday (non peak time) nor Adl friday pm peak time.

Hurry up Qantas.

Hi there - I've just joined the forum and noted this thread with interest!

I'd really, really like to pitch to Qantas to see if they'd consider having Internode provide the free WiFi in the Qantas lounges generally. We'd be really keen to do it.

Running into the WiFi being dead in the International F lounge yesterday (on my way to California - where I am this week) just cemented that interest (in wanting to fix it by seeing it replaced).

We've been providing significant WiFi hotspot services for some years, in spots all over the country. That includes coverage throughout the Adelaide and Darwin terminals (public areas - and it reaches into the front half of the lounge in Adelaide at least). We'd just love to provide more coverage in more airports, and the only barrier to that has been to get permission to do so (which is easy in some airports, hard-to-impossible in others).

If anyone has some clues as to how (and/or who) we might approach at Qantas to pursue the notion and/or to pitch to them to do it, I'd be very appreciative of the information.

Thanks!!

Hi Simon,

Welcome to AFF, it would be great to see you do something for QF, we might then get some good access.

Ps you might want to hang around here, you never know, you might get addicted to the site like a few of us.

Welcome aboard Simon, and yes - some of us have a very good idea of who you are. I enjoy following the NBN debates with interest and how you're trying to influence better consumer and commercial outcomes for all players.

Nerd worship over, I believe there are be some around here who have contacts within the industry and at QF but it would not be our role to speak on their behalf. If they are willing to use their connections I'm sure they will get in touch and come forward as appropriate.

I won't repeat what I've said earlier in this thread, but I'm sure from your reading it has become obvious this problem is spread across multiple major Qantas ports, both in coverage area, coverage quality, and network performance. Personally I don't bother with the lounge wifi any more, and just use a 3G WWAN connection.

Best of luck to you with this, and here's hoping that QF can finally provide an access solution that gives the customers what they need, on terms and service levels that are commercially viable for all concerned.

Hi Simon,
Welcome to AFF. I'm sure the QF reps that read these forums will contact you if they are interested in your offer! The (lack of) WiFi in the QF lounges is appalling! However, didn't QF join up with Optus recently in some freq flyer partnership? I hope this doesn't mean that Optus will be providing the WiFi access in the lounges!

I have 3 internode DSL accounts.

Mostly happy with them but have a long running packet loss issue at 1 premises that they can't seem to get to the bottom of. It's the only connection I have that's on an Optus DSLAM.

QF is only newish to corporate wifi, installed for the NGCI handheld devices and desiring it for the HQ refit.

It would be great for another provider to break the lock in of Telstra.

Some details emailed to Simon. :)

In CBR now heading back home to MEL after a day trip here, sitting in the J lounge and wifi is just dead. Can connect to the Telstra hotspot but nothing happens after that.
Having to use my tether connection which is Optus (patchy reception up here)

+1. Same thing happened to me this afternoon in SYD J lounge too. Now I'm in CBR J lounge and no difference. Have to use my Telstra Next G connection.

Well only a 40 min stop here till the flight back home.

I'm a big internode fan and a happy customer so +1 for the offer Simon. NTL is another airport where internode have done a great job on the free wifi.

However, as i'm a Virgin FF i feel i should suggest that internode do the Lounges as well -- except for the fact that wifi there works fine - i cant think of when i last had a problem with it.

The wifi hasn't worked for me the last couple of times I've been in the MEL lounge, it wouldn't work in PER last week and wouldn't work in the SYD J lounge yesterday afternoon. Get as far as the 'Connect' button and it just whirs away after that and goes nowhere. To confuse the issue, just above and to the right of the Connect button, there's a (text) link to a terms and conditions page, at the bottom of which there are "I Accept" and "I Decline" buttons. I've no idea why they are there if the service is free and visiting this page isn't mandatory - but clicking the I Accept button does nothing ...... except eventually take you back to the login page where the Connect button doesn't work.

I assumed it was just me and/or something screwed up on my iPad but then I found this thread ....

Last time wifi worked in an Australian QF lounge for me was sometime in 2009. it's no secret that this is a long term issue.

Only a matter of time before QF gets shafted for misleading and deceptive advertising:-

- high speed wifi in lounges
- priority boarding
- upgradable fares (lottery rules)

Fix your Internet Qantas. It's not hard.
