Hi everyone,

I have a situation where I will be meeting my wife in Melbourne however I will be coming from Brissy and she from Perth. My flight gets in before hers so have a couple of hours to kill.

Are you able to access the QP if you don't have a forward journey? - should I just flash my old BP and sneak in?

Cheers

Officially, no you can't use the QP. Having said that though, I have been in this situaton where I have had to wait - lift has been delayed, SO coming in on a later flight, moved to an earlier flight to help QF out - and have never been refused, even in MEL which has lounge dragons trained by Himmler.

about 6 weeks ago i encountered a imilar situation where i was inbound to SYD from AKL and my wife, BNE to SYD but some 2 hours later.

i wasn't able to hitch a free ride on the bus from intenational to domestic, but once i am at domestic, i asked nicely and showed my AKL/SYD boarding pass and i was allowed to wait at the lounge for her

Agree with the Himmler comment :( .

MEL is the only place I have been declined. Elsewhere they don't seem to mind too much.

If Qantas Platinum status, then no problem as you can access the Qantas Club lounge at any time. Otherwise, as thadocta says, the Qantas Club lounges are departure lounges, so technically a Qantas Club member or OneWorld Sapphire status FF member can only use the lounge before an eligible flight.

However, prior to the Platinum privilege of anytime access, I have been granted access in similar situations when awaiting the arrival of a colleague on another flight.

My recommendation is to be polite and honest and ask if they will permit you to await the arriving flight in the lounge.

I've frequently used the lounge after arrival to freshen up, fix my hair, have breakfast etc before a meeting, especially on the CBR - PERTH leg. I don't think I've ever tried it in Melbourne, but I've done it many times elsewhere.

Flying from CBR in winter, you need to catch the first flight out in the morning, because later flights are usually delayed due to the fog (ie, flights can take off, but not land, so you need to take the first flight, which was on the ground already). This is so common that the AAT has actually issued a practice direction saying that lawyers may not use the fog as an excuse for being late to the Tribunal.

That means that you can easily arrive in another Capital city at 7am for a meeting at 10am. So I regularly head off to the lounge and check my e-mail, have some coffee etc before going to my meeting.

What is your lounge entitlement? If QF Platinum, then you are entitled to use the lounges any time. If anything else, then you are admitted through the generosity or ignorance of the lounge agent. But such generosity is common :D .

I'm surprised that Qantas will not let you enter in arrival though. There are quite a few situations where a person might validly need to go to the lounge and it is not like suddenly a few 100 ppl would do it every day.

I also thought that I was allowed to go to the Dom Qantas Lounge even if I was not flying.

Regards
Daniel

Only if you have Qantas Platinum FF status.

I've been able to scam my way into MY QP at ROK, CNS & OOL when not flying but usually waiting to meet an incoming colleague/rello. It can't simply be my charm but I guess its usually before the bar opens and they reckon I can't do too much damage to their stocks.

Came into BNE from CNS one very rainy evening, saw the cab wait-list about 2 furlongs long so entered the QP on my BP to let the situation drain away with the help of some Neck Oil.

Erstwhile gold, currently silver; will be gold again in two weeks' time! Have never been platinum, though I might yet make it this financial year. But this is all surprising to me. I am far more likely to use the lounge on arrival than I am on departure (I'm always running late, but I always build in time for myself at the other end in case the flight is.) I must say I always assumed that if I was flying, I could use the lounge at either end of the flight. I've been doing this for years, first with Ansett and then with Qantas! And no one's ever suggested before that I couldn't. V strange! Or v lucky, I guess. But it does seem to me that I am far more likey to want lounge services after a long hot tiring flight than beforehand.

I've used QPs on arrival in both SYD and MEL. Having said that, the last time was a couple of years ago, so they may be less generous than before. I've always been totally honest, and it's always been after the 06:xx flight from CBR.

Of course if you are on a day trip there should be no problem. Since you have a departing flight on the same day you are entitled to enter, even if you are doing so really, really early (e.g. 0700 for a 1730 flight!). :D

Or use the ticketing angle,
1) Buy a cheap fully refundable ticket, so the res in on the system and tell them your getting your boarding pass at the gate. On the way out, cancel the ticket at the desk.

2) Tell them at the front desk you need access to the internet to book your onward travel for the day.

Just an idea. But honesty is the best policy.

Rob

I've noticed people just flashing the Gold Card at the front desk and going in. I always flash the BP but if you are using the QuickCheck inside then you won't have a BP until after entry.

Soooo you could get away with it... unless they swipe your card which I haven't often seen done (except in 3rd Reich territory)

I am flying to LAX on points then transferring to UA. As a Gold I can go in the departure lounge QC in SYD but in LAX obviously I can't... Have got a long wait until my onward flight and so I'm terribly tempted. But I don't want to get locked up so I think I'll steer clear.

I do know of managers at my work who regularly hold job interviews and meetings at the QC - they are not Plats and not flying so how do they work that?

2 weeks ago in CBR I booked a meeting room for a few phone calls where I needed a desk and some quiet. They charged me $20 for the hour - whilst I was flying, they seemed far more interested in the $$ than anything else - maybe some QP staff have been transferred to CBR from MEL ?

You cna't get into the LAX lounges unless you have a boarding pass for the same day travel out of that terminal. You can't get past the security checkpoint onto the terminal concourse and hence can't get to the lounge door.

i have just shown my WP card and that is enough to get me in. i have taken my spouse in while waiting for relatives/friends, i have met work colleagues at the QP when they have arrived on flights etc.

i was thinking of getting a couple of mates together, going out the one friday night for a couple of cleansing ales before going elsewhere ... or just stay there until we get asked politely to leave ... just to see what i can get away with

But that's different. It is (or was, depending on your source material) a stated benefit of WP that you can get into the QP even when not flying.

QP membership or oneworld Sapphire trying to use a QP on arrival is another thing altogether.
