As most of you know the rules change on 25 May so that the granting of one upgrade credit per 450 status credits changes to a bonus 5,000 points for the same number of SCs. Currently I am 60 SCs away from another upgrade credit and am not sure whether I will earn these before the end of May.

Does anyone know what will happen if I fail to reach the 450? My assumption is that the generosity  of QF is that I will get nothing and will have to earn a further 450 SCs to get my first bonus. Clearly the fair way to do it would be to provide a pro-rata number of bonus points as at 25 May to all members. Therefore if I stay at my current level I should be entitled to (390/450 x 5,000) 4,333 points.

We'll see. Any comments?

Well, why don't I try to answer my own question?

As it turns out I had to contact QC on another matter and asked them this question. Basically the balance of SCs stay and if the full 450 hasn't been earned at 25 May the bonus will be applied when the full complement is reached. The question to then ask is whether it is better to try to get the SCs or wait for the 5,000 point bonus? It probably depends on how many UCs one has I suppose. I currently have 2 unused and so 3 would be handy on, say a trip to Singapore.

Sully, since you're so good at answering your own questions, isn't that last one even easier to answer than the first... you answer yourself really here:

I currently have 2 unused and so 3 would be handy on, say a trip to Singapore.

Wouldn't a Y to J upgrade for an 8 hour flight (thinking of the $$$ value that you are obtaining, let alone the other benefits) be worth more than 5,000 FF points. I'd say an unequivocal YES :!:

Lindsay, I finally found time to have a meeting with myself to workshop a solution. While there were a number of options available (we looked at about 12 before shortlisting two) it was unanimously decided that the both of us should attempt to achieve the UCs by the end of May. The 5,000 points is of course clearly the second option to follow.

Now, I have to ask myself whether it would be preferable to take the upgrade going up or back? A further meeting is scheduled post 25th May pending the success in achieving option 1 to assess the situation. Once we have agreed on a firm course of action we shall be pleased to share the decision with all interested parties.

Now, I wonder if I have said enough on this subject?

I think yes.

Sully, glad you have sorted yourself out :D .

I have routed my current DONE4 to ensure I end with 4 UC's which is enough for a trans-Pacific upgrade. So those 4 UC are worth a lot more than 5000 points each.

I have one upgrade currently processed (QF10 MEL-SYD in F) and I requested that be done using 5000 points. That was done and a few days later they took a further 5000 point, then credited it and then took a UC for the upgrade, so I have paid twice. Took a phone call and an email and a further 5000 points payment and refund to get it all sorted out! Phew.

Now to see if my LAX-JFK upgrade waitlist clears. Looks like no chance of LHR-MEL in early May since that flight is now showing F0 :( . Oh well, at least I get a Skybed for the trip home.
