I haven't flown Malaysian (partly due to their recent 'issues'), however I've just booked flights for my husband for his business trip and assumed that SC would be earned. I've just used the calculator and am horrified to discover that there are no SC for business class travel - only economy or flexible economy. Will he still earn SC at the lower level? Or not at all? We don't have to pay until next week but it may be a case of changing the flight to the Emirates code share leaving Melbourne at 2am... Not convenient at all as he has a board meeting during the day prior to leaving...

If Qantas can't do flights with a schedule that fits in with business arrangements, they shouldn't be slugging their frequent flyers for choosing an airline within the Oneworld group that can cater for this!

Also can anyone tell me what the A330 beds are like on Malaysian - I did tell him that Emirates beds on this leg are still the angle-flat beds as well, so it's not really a choice (except for the fact I've discovered the SC issue)

MEL and SYD to KUL flights get the refurbished A330 with lie flat J class seats which are almost identical (same manufacturer) to the ones on the refurbished QF A330s.

As for status credits, yes you only get half the SCs in all classes when flying MH to and from Australia and on routes to/from Europe too. Same deal when flying CX, BA, LAN, QR etc to and from Australia and onwards to other destinations. It's the red roo's way of discouraging you from flying with other OW carriers.

Your flight will earn at the "Flexible Economy" rate. See https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/airline-earning#mh

The business seats on MH's refurb A330's are standard "Vantage" rather than "Vantage XL" which QF use. This means slightly less seat width due to an extra seat (or console/armrest) per row. Would still be preferable over the EK 777 product, with mostly all aisle access and a flat bed.

Overall agree but not exactly "half"

J SYD-HKG = 120 SC QF and CX
J SYD-DXB-LHR = 280 SC QF
J SYD-SIN-LHR = 180 SC BA
J SYD-HKG-LHR = 180 SC CX

Best is to get a QF marketed (codeshare) flight on the OW routing. QF Codeshares get QF level SC. MH is a low cost/ budget claytons partner in the OW Club, so QF SC at J/F level not earned on J/F seats on MH coded flights.

Hard to agree with that conclusion considering they use to earn at full rates until simpler and fairer MkII. Also since the earning restriction is only for flights Australia-Asia, Asia to Europe/Middle East. All other MH flights earn full J SC. It is pretty clear that the recent earning cut is about making people fly with EK or QF on the "Kangaroo route".

I know a lot of people don't like EK and don't fly them, but these days, to earn J rate of QFF points and QF SC, have to fly with them as they have a QF flight number, thus earning max possible QFF points and QF SC paying J fares.
Yes, it does take longer to go from an airport they don't fly from, (via MEL/PER/SYD, but thats the only way now adays).
They do fly from ADL to DXB which is good if living close to SA.
I have flown EK several times, I did have reservations, ie, 2nd thoughts, but in the end, there is not a choice.
EK has "helped" me get to 550 QF SC as of now, will be 710 end of Jul.

which is pretty much nearly everywhere and nearly impossible to get QF coded flight on MH metal.

Granted it takes two to to agree to tango (so not absolving QF from this) and agree that the EK tie up has diluted the OW SC earn. But just about everyone in the OW club has J/F earn for J/F cabin.

Is OW dead man walking?

That's not exactly correct. First off the QF flight number is only important fro flying EK. A QF flight number is not required to earn on oneworld airlines. But I've mentioned this previsouly. Secondly it is highly route dependent with earning on OW partner airlines. Thirdly EK has better coverage of australian cities than even Qantas. At a guess only Hobart and possibly Darwin are not serviced by EK. So no the options are not only via MEL/PER/SYD. Also in the context of Malaysian the EK coverage is better than MH on the routes where MH earning is restricted.

What is this strange obsession with a QF flight number. MH flight numbers earn. It is not pretty much nearly everywhere. Masses of Intra Asia MH flights that get J earn. The only limitation is on the "kangaroo route" . i.e. Australia to KUL and KUL to DXB/LHR - no more than about half a dozen routes.

if I want to fly intra asia with MH, I would need to get to a hub first. Aus-KUL on MH gets limited SC before I can get reasonable SC intravasia via KUL hub. I could go EK into KUL but then I will need to do separate PNRs for intra asia. Or go via SIN on QF and then MH into KUL, but QF tends to sell QF/3K combos so not a lot of choice into KUL on MH on 1 PNR

EG QF35 into SIN arrives 1800 hrs. There are several MH flights into KUL within a reasonable MCT but QF do not sell them nor codeshare

So im flying MEL-SIN QF35 then separate PNR MH616 into KUL

Just another enhancement

You can ticket QF to SIN then MH to KUL on a single QF ticket. The ability to do this has been around for quite some time, long before the Sept 2015 date shown below.

Code:
LN FARE BASIS OW AUD RT B PEN DATES/DAYS AP MIN MAXFR
01 OMA 613 O NRF S11JUL 15SEP+ + - 12M R
                                      B24JUN -
ADDON SPECIFIED QF1770 ADDON EFF09SEP15
  1 * SYD-SIN-QF/3K/[B]MH[/B]-KUL

Even on sale fares. The above is for an O class sale fare for SYD to KUL.
