I have a very first world dilemma and I'd appreciate your thoughts and opinions please.

I fly almost exclusively QF and I accumulate around the 1000 SC per year. This maintains SG easily but is still a long way off WP.

With VA I could easily make WP year in year out, especially using family pooling.

I guess my question is

1. Is QF WP worth the extra expense to first achieve and then maintain? I'm self funded. I'd like to enjoy the J lounges more often I guess and I'm well on my way to LTS.

2. Is there any real extra benefit between VA SG and WP?

3. In your opinion would it be best to just share the love and achieve SG for both?

My thoughts:

1. No, the additional personal expense is not worth it IMHO. If business / work was funding the bulk of the first 1000SC's then I would say go for it but doing it all yourself doesn't pass muster in my book. However I acknowledge that we all have different thresholds in terms how much personal $$ we want to spend on flights etc to predominantly gain lounge access (assuming beyond the 1000SC you probably wouldn't have flown other than to get to WP).

2. Key benefit from VA SG to WP is the 4 free upgrade certificates. I know there are a couple of other actual benefits but I don't value them very highly.

3. If you are well on your way to LTS then consider that in the longer term it is probably worth chasing / achieving LTG in due course. In the mean time I would personally go for SG across both.

To the main question is: Where do you fly? If it's mainly domestically it's probably not a bad idea to have a foot in both camps IMO.

Thanks simcat and TomVexille I think I will go for SG on both carriers. The majority of my flying is regional but will be doing some more international in the coming years, starting with Nepal in March. I have a $99 a year VA lounge membership through a work deal, but extra baggage, international lounges etc appeal to me.
Unfortunately I won't make VA SG before March because I'm flying Etihad and would love to utilise the lounge in AUH.

Thanks for your responses.

The luggage allowance for VA WP is generous and the upgrades are handy but not always available when you need to fly. I've not noticed much other difference between WP on VA and SG on Qantas.
