We were on QF94 this morning which, due to fog, diverted to SYD to refuel.
My wife and I were booked to fly to Mel, then fly up to Syd later on friday morning - there were reasons for this, and they were not negative!
After the announcement by the captain that we were going to Syd, I mentioned to one of the crew that we were actually going to Syd and it would be great to get off - I knew the answer, but thought I'd ask anyway.
He gave me "the look" like why ask the question, but we had a laugh and I went back to our seat.
After we landed and parked in the freight area to refuel, the cabin manager came down to us and asked if we wanted to get off!!!!!!
We said yes, hurriedly collected all our gear, as we had not expected this, and walked the top deck to go down the front stairs and then down a set of stairs to the tarmac under the wings (it was raining)!
They told us our bags would not come off but would be delivered later today, and we were fine with that.
A small bus collected us and dropped us off to go and clear customs and leave the airport.
Customs was fun as no one had keyed in any arrivals from QF94 so we larked about with the customs guy for about 15 mins before he could clear us, went to qantas baggage and arranged to have our 5 bags shipped to Adelaide, where we fly home to tomorrow.
I know others will have been mightily inconvenienced, but from our point of view, it worked out brilliantly.
The bonus I got was having my camera at the bottom of the steps, and also having to wait 10 mins for the bus to arrive, I got some awesome pics of the 380 from a place most passengers do not get to see.
Well done Qantas for the initiative and great customer service.
