QF93 connection to QF11

Hi all,

I've been searching this question everywhere, but I seem to get mixed answers.

I'm flying on QF93 from MEL-LAX and then QF11 from LAX-JFK.

My question is: Do I need to clear security/immigration/collect bags/recheck bags etc. in LAX during the stopover between QF93 and QF11?

I've flown QF108 and QF94 last year in which no security screening or immigration was required during the stop at LAX, but have never done gone the other way (QF93).

Yes, immigration, collect baggage and customs at LAX.

QF11 LAX-JFK is treated as a domestic flight.

On departure (Such as QF108 [now QF12]->QF94) the USA don't seem to be concerned as much - you are leaving the country.

Yes. You will need to clear customs with your bag in LAX as that's the first port of entry to the USA. Your bag will still come off the luggage carousel in LAX even though it will be tagged through to JFK.

That's because there's no outwards Customs when you depart the USA. By the way how did you arrive in the USA last time on the trip when you came back to Australia on QF108 & QF94?

Thank you! Good to know. I've got 1 hour and 45 mins connection so hopefully QF93 is on time and there are not long queues at immigration.

Last time when I was on QF94 and QF108 I had been on a round the world trip, so I entered the US on the east Coast coming from Europe.

Immigration experiences at LAX are in a state of flux at the moment. If you have an e-Passport, and have entered the USA previously on it (and of course have an ESTA), you should be able to use one of the electronic kiosks (a bit like SmartGate) for immigration; then follow the right line for Customs, and have a much better (and quicker) time of it compared to the 'old days'. However there seems to be quite a few exceptions, so as usual plan for the worst and hope for the best .

Also, not sure if this is still the case, but when I last arrived at LAX, maybe 6 months ago, if you had a tight-ish connection (especially with the arriving plane being late) they would give you an big orange card upon de-planing which was an 'express' card through immigration and customs, and security at your onward terminal.

All that said, with a Qantas to Qantas connection, you should be looked after.

Last year we left late from Sydney to Dallas and I had a connecting flight to Nashville, we attempted the priority boarding but we still missed the flight, AA were great, they organised the next available flight for me no problem. I would say as long as they are both QF flights, you will be well looked after.

The customs/immigration/TSA experience at LAX has improved appreciably over the past few months. Previously, they were a reason to avoid all travel to the country.
