A heads up for those on QF10 in May

QF10 Renumbered to QF110 for Five Services in May28 March 2014

Due to system requirements, Qantas flight QF 10 Dubai-Melbourne has been renumbered and will operate as Qantas flight QF 110 on 8, 13, 14, 20 and 29 May 2014.

The prior connecting inbound sector of QF10 London-Dubai will not operate on these days. Qantas will contact customers with existing bookings and reaccommodate them onto QF2 from London to Dubai.

What does it mean "due to system requirements" Is that because they are doing scheduled maintenance work on the runways in Dubai. Qantas have a later departure time from Melbourne to London in May, June and July departing at 7:15 PM because of these works instead of the 4:15 PM departure time.

I'd say it is some requirement within the GDS. It is strange though!

I am 95% sure the new QF9/10 schedule will look very similar to this:

QF9 MEL 23:30 – DXB 06:30 (+1 day)
QF9 DXB 08:00– LHR 12:30

The QF9 aircraft would then likely return in the evening as QF2 and the QF1 aircraft, arriving early in the morning would turn around as QF10.

QF10 LHR 11:00 – DXB 20:50
QF10 DXB 22:20 – MEL 18:45 (+1 day)

98% sounds pretty accurate. I am flying from Melbourne to London in December and then from London back to Melbourne in January. Do you have any idea as to when Qantas will release these new timings?

So I wonder how this will be achieved given that QF94 cannot turn around in time to operate QF93 without any changes to the current schedule?

I don't know exactly but I would guess sometime in the next few weeks. In the meantime if you work around these timings (note that they are approximate) you should be okay and if I happen to be way off I'm sure Qantas will re-accommodate you on other flights if necessary.

QF94 currently arrives into MEL at 0920 and QF93 departs at 1010. If it runs much later than 1010, it will not have enough time at LAX to allow the LAX-JFK-LAX shuttle flight to operate. The current schedule allows:
- about 2 hours for a QF93 to QF107 connection
- 105 minutes at JFK for turnaround and
- 100 minutes for a QF108 to QF94 connection.

I wonder what aspect of that operation can be tightened to give QF94 enough time to form QF93 at MEL while retaining the connection to the JFK shuttle.

Put you on an AA flight to earn less FF points and SC's? ;)

The other thing in their mind could be (if these changes are even going to occur) is if you are intending to go to JFK from MEL or BNE, filter you through SYD and catch QF107 through. From correspondence I have seen you are actually better off doing this FF point and SC wise.

QF are still very quiet on this - thought they would have it sorted before taking peak season bookings for UK/Europe next year??

I was thinking the same thing as I have now booked QF 9/10 return with domestic connections for next March. I've allowed an extra day either side of departure and return as I presume that I won't arrive in LHR until lunchtime and will depart LHR just before lunch.

Obviously having an issue getting those (record price paid ) slots back!

It depends on what slots they are trying to get. QF owns 2 slot pairs which are currently leased by BA.
QF have 4 options.

1. Take back a slot pair from BA (and lease the now available morning/night pair to BA or EK?).
2. Trade slots with another airline.
3. Sell the current 9/10 slots and acquire a new pair
4. Buy another (5th) pair and lease the current 9/10 pair.

What are BA using their leased slots for now?

Interesting piece in the AFR this morning. In short, a DFW exec met with Simon Hickey last week to lobby for the spare frame freed up by the QF9/10 retiming to be used for DFW.

I realise there's discussion that the A380 doesn't have the legs for DFW, but it does make me wonder whether the delay on announcing the new QF9/10 details has to do with a bigger announcement including DFW (or some other port).

Either way, I wish they'd announce something soon, so we can plan LHR travel accordingly.

The 380 has a greater range than the 747ER by a fair margin.

The 744ER can't do DFW-BNE at full payload, but I believe the A388 can. DFW-SYD would also be possible but at reduced load (like DFW-BNE with the 744ER).
