They have already leased some, and a lease does not have the balance sheet bonus a sale does.
How so? A sale is a large one off payment. A lease is a smaller ongoing payment. Depending on the terms of the lease, you could end up getting more over the lease period then with a one off sale.

Qantas need large payments in a short time to hit their $2B target, that's their endgame.

Great that that's the endgame, as opposed to a long term sustainable (even, profitable) airline.
 
I think they have shown their endgame by their handling of the 787s and the terminal sales.

While LHR slots are extremely hard to get, QF will probably come up with a deal to sell them to EK.

EK are on record wanting more slots at LHR. QF also leased various slots to BA early 2012 for 3 years at a very good price so they too will be available from April 2015.

EK would pay good $$$ for these. Or QF will negotiate some other consideration (ie amendment to their joint venture) for these slots.

I am flying out with my family on 23 December with Qantas first-classreturn from Melbourne to London. Like many others I cannot make any onward plans.

If your flights are refundable, just cancel them and re-book on EK.
 
I asked QF what was going on yesterday. Got this back this morning

"we will be able to provide further information on re-timed services later this year."

asked what "later" meant and noted that people are unable to book given the uncertainty

they replied with "we appreciate your sentiment, however will make an announcement once the timings have been secured"

this would suggest that even after 2 months, they haven't locked anything in.
