QF805 fail

the time in the AIR on LST-MEL is quite a bit longer than SYD-CBR.

LST-MEL distance: 296 miles
CBR-SYD distance: 147 miles

Quite right but never-the-less we are talking about flight times (and ability to get a service done).

QF scheduled flights SYD-CBR are variously 50 or 55 mins.
QF and JQ scheduled flights MEL-LST are 1hr 5 or 10 mins.

I was actually surprised that the time difference was a long as it is. Once you chop off the climb/descend no service parts of the flight, the 'service' window is pretty small in both cases.

I'm old enough to remember when some HBA-MEL flights stopped off at LST on the way! That's 90 miles and I'm pretty sure there wasn't a drinks service :)

Sometimes with SYD-CBR half the flight is spent taxiing to the third runway! Average flight times are only 25-35 minutes, and that includes takeoff and landing. In all a very small service margin.

Many a time I've heard the pilot over the PA promising that we are actually planning to fly to CBR...

Time in the air on MEL-LST is at least 15 minutes longer. That is a massive difference when it comes to service, there is simply no comparison to the 30 minute sector times on CBR-SYD.

You could be onto something. My suggestion is that all SYD-CBR flights should depart from 34L. The taxi time will probably be longer than the flight time, so F&B can be distributed just after boarding, and the rubbish collection done just prior to the holding point. Easy.

The taxi time at SYD is indeed ridiculous. There was one night where we spent 30 minutes on tarmac after the taxi due to high traffic and poor weather conditions, so we actually DID spend more time on tarmac than we did on air!

I just realised I have a QF807 flight this Sunday, travelling MEL-SYD-CBR that night. Will let you guys know how SYD-CBR goes ;)
